My puppy eats constantly but won't gain weight. What's wrong?

Poor girl. Rosy likely has intestinal parasites in her belly, causing her to not gain weigh. Intestinal parasites can also give a bloated belly appearance. Rosy needs to have her feces tested at your local veterinarian practice or humane society and get dewormed for parasites. Even when puppies are negative, they are still dewormed regularly at this age with a broad spectrum dewormer (i.e. pyrantel palmoate). Also make sure that Rosy is on a high quality dog food that will be more filling, such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Evo, Merrick, Iams, etc.

First, I would make sure you feed Dio a puppy food, not an adult food. Second, make sure you are feeding him enough cups of food. Third, make sure to feed a high quality large breed puppy food. A grain free brand like Merrick or Wellness or Taste of the Wild would be great. Even Science Diet Large Breed puppy would be ok. Last, make sure your puppy has had a fecal test run to make sure he doesn’t have worms. A monthly heartworm prevention, like Heartgard or Interceptor, treats parasites too. If your dog is still not gaining, they may need further testing or work up. In addition, adding a probiotic may help as well. I like Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes and Probiotics.

You should have Zena examined by your veterinarian to make sure she is healthy. At the same time you can get her wormed (worms could be a reason for not gaining weight), and vaccinated. You say her dam and sire did not look healthy....there could be a congenital problem that could keep her from gaining weight. Feed her a good quality complete puppy food for medium to large dogs and feed her according to the instructions on the bag.

I would recommend a really good deworming since he is young. However it would be best to take a fecal to the vet to determine if he has parasites and if so what kind. If he does not have any parasites I would recommend a food change. I would try a basic diet like purina, royal canine, or science diet puppy food.

It could be Lady is suffering from intestinal worms causing her to have diarrhea and not put on weight. They can be common in puppies. I would have her checked out by a vet today or tomorrow, and bring in a sample of her feces with you for the vet to examine under a microscope. I would be more focused on how Maya looks and feels. If Maya is gaining weight every week and has a good coat with good coverage of fat over her ribs than I would not be concerned. Some dogs will just eat less than others or can be less interested in food. I would make sure that Maya has a fecal exam done by a vet to see if she needs deworming. A lot of young dogs have parasites which will cause a problem with weight gain and how they feel. I hope that helps and congrats on the new puppy

Puppies tend to go through a lanky phase especially if they're a taller breed. Typically they will grow taller before they start to fill out and grow muscle mass. It sounds like your kid is still young and otherwise very happy, so I would give it some time if she was dewormed appropriately. If you're feeding once a day it might be best to consider twice a day feeding as well, like 2 cups twice a day instead of 3 cups once a day. It's very hard to overfeed puppies as they are actively growing. So if you feel like she is not gaining weight appropriately you can try adding an additional 1/2 cup at a time and reassessing in a week or two. Also most veterinary clinics will be fine with you bringing your pet in just to use the scale, just call ahead to ask. This would be a good way for you to know about weight gain.
