My puppy has dry skin and dandruff. What foods or supplements help?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to skin allergies mostly due to the fact that it started after moving. Adding fish oil can be considered regardless to help with the dry skin. You can use the commercial kind for dogs. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

The flakes are most likely the dry skin coming off. You can give him an omega3 fatty acid supplement for sure. You need to use a product made for dogs. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. There is a product called Welactin that tends to work well. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Jameson wear an elizabethan collar at all times if he wants to lick the area. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I would not recommend using all three of these oils together, as you can cause problems with the liver and pancreas in some cases by "overloading" fats like this. Fish oil has been shown to be the most helpful with skin issues like this, so you could try a good fish oil supplement such as Welactin for dogs - just follow the instructions on the label for dosing, based on your dog's weight.

Try switching the diet to a food like Royal Canin or Nutro. Both of these foods contain additional supplements for coat health and many pets respond nicely to the diet after about a month. Sounds like that brand of food isn't good for Calypso's skin. You can try another brand of food, or you can try giving her fish oil supplements. She can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. So for her, 600mg.
