My puppy has distemper, but no fever or cough. Is that normal?

It could be Distemper, but for Halo's sake, I hope it isn't. Distemper often starts similarly to what you are describing and can quickly get worse. I understand that she may seem OK today, but that can quickly change with Distemper. If she becomes less active, or starts having seizures, then it's very important that she go to the vet for hospitalization in order to give her the best chance of recovering. There are some tests for distemper, but they are not always reliable. Therefore, even if Halo did get tested and showed positive for distemper, I would not call it a definitive diagnosis; but I would definitely treat her for distemper. If no test was done, then the diagnosis is not 100% and the cause of the sneezing and diarrhea is possibly due to some other infection. However, I'm sure the vets there have seen many cases of Distemper and may know of an outbreak at this time - which would go a long ways to support their diagnosis. Hi there and thank you for posting your question! She may just have an upper respiratory infection starting. Puppies are quite prone to getting sick with a developing immune system. If you are concerned about the sneezing, I would have your veterinarian examine her to give you peace of mind. With distemper, sneezing can certainly occur. Puppies with distemper also go downhill fast and begin developing multiple other symptoms such as lethargy, inappetance, seizures / neurological symptoms, fever, etc. If these symptoms begin showing, I would certainly be worried about a viral infection like distemper. Typically dextrose is given when their blood sugar is low. A low bloo sugar is a result of not eating and it can cause weakness and seizures. Distemper can be fatal. It has potential to cause respiraory symptomas and GI problems and in advanced cases it attacks the nervous system and cause a head bob and seizures. It is not always a fast progression, so they can be sick for weeks before getting better or worse. It is a viral infection so suportive care is all you do to wait for their body to fight the virus off. make sure the secondar bacterial infections stay under control with antibiotics, keep the fever under control and make sure they are eating and drinking well

Hello, there are just so many diseases & conditions that can cause vomiting & diarrhea, distemper is just one of them. Did your vet do any diagnostic tests, check for intestinal parasites, administer antibiotics, fluids, anti-nausea medications? If Bazzi is continuing to eat and hasn't coughed as much, it may be the antibiotics are working and he doesn't have distemper. I would continue to watch him closely, and bring him back into the vet if he stops eating or shows any new symptoms. Best of luck.

Hello. Hopefully not. Hard pad disease is a manifestation of distemper along with the respiratory signs. I think it is important to have a diagnosis done. Please see your vet who will run a PCR test to determine if this is distemper. At the very least, it does seem that Frank needs immediate treatment for whatever is going on. They can present with respiratory (cough, think nasal discharg), GI (vomiting, diarrhea) and neurological signs (unable to walk properly, seizures, etc). They are typically weak, lethargic and refusing to eat and drink. If these signs describe your puppy, then you will need to seek emergency veterinary care for her tonight. Otherwise if she is eating, drinking and acting normally, then I would have her seen on Monday. I hope this information helps!
