My 4-month-old puppy is sick with diarrhea. How can I help her?

Hello. I am so sorry that your puppy is so sick. The medications she is receiving are fine, but really need to be administered in a hospital situation, But I can understand the constraints & difficulties you have with veterinary care in your country. Lousie may have parvo or distemper, diseases that are difficult to treat even under the best circumstances. I would at least try to keep her confined so that she only has access to clean water. You can try giving her chicken or beef broths or stocks, too. All we can do with these very young patients is to hospitalize & administer the proper treatments. Without this, just keep her warm & dry & keep her away from dirty drains & hopefully with time, she will begin to improve. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi and thanks for your question. If the diarrhea starts again after the metronidazole, it could any number of issues. If she was diagnosed with a parasite, like Giardia, or a bacteria, it could be she still has the parasite or bacterial present in her GI and will need another round of metronidazole. That is not totally uncommon. A viral infection may be another possibility as well as a food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease. I hope this helped!

Vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy are quite concerning in any dog, especially puppies because of the diseases they can get such as parvovirus. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They would be able to check for this disease as well as checking for other possibilities such as intestinal worms or other infections. The sooner these diseases are diagnosed the better the outcome tends to be. At the very least, Gus can be started on anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications and his hydration status can be checked. Hello, I am so sorry Paris is not feeling well. I hope your veterinarian has examined her stool for intestinal parasites & ruled out the possibility that this is a virus such as Parvo. Even if there are no parasites, I would still deworm Paris with fenbendazole for a minimum of 3 days, possibly up to 5 days using the same dose each day. Then I would put Paris on complete fast for a minimum of 12-24 hours. After this fasting period, start her on a bland diet of very small amounts of 25% boiled, skinless chicken & 75% boiled, white rice. You can also use a little low fat cottage cheese. Give her frequent small meals of only this food for the next 3 days, then start to transition her back to her regular diet. If the still has the diarrhea after 3 days using a bland diet, you can repost asking for me & we will try to figure this out. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! I am sorry to hear that suenos is not feeling well. If she is still not improving with what you have done I would get her to the vet as soon as you can. She may have become quite dehydrated from vomiting and having diarrhea. Your vet can replenish the fluid that she has lost with IV fluids or fluids under her skin. I would also want to know why she started having the vomiting and diarrhea in the first place. I would also recommend she have blood work run to ensure nothing systemic is wrong with her. Pancreatitis can show these symptoms and can cause quite a bit of discomfort in animals that are affected by it. There are blood tests that can be performed to confirm pancreatitis and your vet can surely check for this. X-rays might not be a bad idea to rule out an obstruction in the GI tract as a possible cause as well. Especially if she is a scavenger and eats random things, I would push to have abdominal x-rays done right away. I hope this helps and that she gets better!
