Puppy crying after vaccine shot? What helps injection site pain?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 20 days old | 4 lbs

My puppy had a shot today and has pain around the injection site, enough to make her Yelp loudly. What can I do to help her?

You can apply an ice pack to the area of the injection site for today (if your vet is closed). A bag of frozen peas works well for this as it can conform to the area. Be sure to wrap the ice pack/frozen peas in a thin towel or cloth so it isn't directly touching the skin. You can leave it on for 10-15 minutes and reapply every few hours. If she is still painful tomorrow call your vet and they can decide if she needs some prescription pain medication. Signs that she may need to see a vet right away (an emergency vet) would include severe lethargy, vomiting, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, or hives.

Vaccines can sometimes be associated with some injection site discomfort. If she is okay with it you can try lightly placing an ice pack on the area for 5 minutes 2 to 3 times a day for the next day or 2. Just make sure you wrap the ice pack in something like a towel and don't put it ditectly on her skin. Also make sure it feels comfortable on your skin before applying it to hers. I would also recommend letting your vet know about this so they can note it in her record to try to avoid this with her next vaccine. She may also benefit from a little pain medication and your vet could provide this to give now and for you to have on hand for her next vaccine. Just make sure she is otherwise feeling normally and that you are not seeing signs of a vaccine reaction such as facial swelling, hives, vomiting, or diarrhea and that the area is becoming less sore. If Nano is very painful, take a few ice cubes, put them in a plastic bag, wrap a towel around the bag and cool the injection site for 5 minutes, then stop. Buster is probably just sore at the injection sites. This can be normal in young, small puppies. The soreness will probably pass in the next 24 hours. In the meantime you can try icing the area and see if that helps. Why is my puppy yelping and crying suddenly after her first vaccines?

You can see some pain where the vaccines were given. Do not give Penelope any human pain relievers, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try putting a cold compress on the area where she got her vaccines to see if that helps. She should be back to normal within 24 hours, but if she isn't, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Poor Brandi! You can try putting a cold compress on the spot where she received her vaccine to see if that helps. Leave it on for five minutes at a time a couple of times during the day. If you are concerned she is very painful, I would take her back into the vet for some pain medications. Unfortunately many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given, and it's illegal for me to prescribe any drugs for her without seeing her in person. Good luck!

This type of side effect is not uncommon, pain at the site of the vaccination can be severe but it is usually not considered to be an emergency. if the pain seems to still be severe tomorrow, take her to your vet to get it checked, if your vet judges that the pain is indeed severe he will probably give her a pain killer for a couple days.

My puppy is shaking and yelping after vaccines. Is this normal?

My suspicion is that this is injection-site pain and not a "true" vaccine reaction, however I do know that dogs (especially small ones) can be pretty painful in the limb they were vaccinated in for up to 36 hours afterwards. I wouldn't call it "normal" but we definitely see it - both of my own small dogs were painful after their last lepto vaccine. Because they can be pretty miserable, I would recommend calling your vet and asking if they might dispense a bit of pain relief - perhaps only 2 - 3 days worth - to make sure Ted is comfortable over the weekend. And if you see other more concerning signs - swelling about the head or face, difficulty breathing, vomiting, collapse - take him right into an emergency facility.
