My puppy cried after eating. Is he in pain or just wants more food?

If your puppy's body condition looks good (i.e., his ribs aren't sticking out and he has a good covering of soft tissue around his backbone and hips), then I wouldn't necessarily feed him more just because he's still acting hungry - many dogs act hungry all the time, regardless of how much they're fed, and would be quite fat if you fed them as much as they wanted :) With puppies, we don't want them to be overly chubby because this is very hard on their bones and joints as they grow. If you aren't sure if your pup is too thin or too chubby, you can request a one-on-one consultation with one of us and upload a photo for us to look at. Or, you could take him to your vet for a check-up and ask his/her opinion on his body condition.

It would be unlikely that he has an obstruction if he is not vomiting. He could have some gastrointestinal discomfort from a parasite, infection, or possibly eating too fast or over-eating. If it continues, have him examined by your vet to determine if there is an abnormality. Your vet can check a stool sample to look for parasites and prescribe a dewormer, if needed. Your vet can also prescribe an antacid or gastrointestinal protectant to help relieve any discomfort.

Poor pup - there are many possibilities but I would be concerned about a birth defect which is preventing him from digesting or absorbing his food properly. I recommend you video the episodes and take him to your vet for a full physical check up and blood glucose testing

Puppies often cry when they are eating, it's not unusual and they usually grow out of it within a few weeks.

Crying out could be an indication of anxiety or pain in your dog. This may just be a behavioral issue and your pup cries out to get you attention. If these episodes are consistent and increase in frequency then I would recommend having your puppy checked out to make sure there is nothing causing him pain or discomfort. I hope this helps. This should subside within 1-2 days. If it does not improve or it worsens, have Lily evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
