My puppy has a crooked tooth. Is it permanent? Will it straighten?

You could seek referral to a dental specialist but I would not generally recommend removal at sch an early age, indeed the surgery required to remove these may further damage the developing adult teeth and create additional trouble. Rope chews and rubber teething rings may provide enough physical stimulation to jaw to encourage more normal allignment and many dogs manage perfectly well with a crooked smile as long as the teeth are not causing pain due to contact with the lips, tongue or nearby teeth. Continue to monitor for signs of discomfort which may indicate the need for intervention in the future. All adult teeth should be erupted by 9-12months and a complete dental assessment wold be recommended at this stage

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pippa. Every puppy grows and develops at a different rate. At this age, I would recommend monitoring her. If her facial conformation continues to rapidly change, then you will need to discuss it with her veterinarian. If any of her teeth are causing pain by contacting the opposite gum tissue, then intervention by.a veterinary dentist may be necessary. Most puppies will be fine. An underbite is generally less worrisome then an overbite where the lower canine teeth can contact the hard palate. I hope this information helps!

I would not be too concerned about the tooth at this time. It is difficult to tell from the picture, but the tooth in question looks as if it is a baby tooth that has broken off. If this is the case, the tooth will fall out sometime between 12-16 weeks of age. If this is an adult tooth, then I would recommend you continue to monitor it for now. If the tooth is still looking abnormal at the time of your dog’s spay (around 6 months of age) then your vet can remove it while she is already under anesthesia. Congratulations on your new puppy!!! To answer your question, no they are not expected to out grow the underbite. The underbite will always be present and does not generally get worse. Most dogs with underbites don’t experience many problems. The main issue I see in practice is if the teeth align and rub again each other or create a wound within the gums or hard palate. Typically the adult teeth will starting coming around 5.5-6 months of age. If Z broke the puppy teeth, then they will fall out soon and he should be fine. Monitor him for any signs of pain or abscesses. Please see the veterinarian when in doubt. If you can post a photo, it would be easier to tell. I hope he stays out of trouble!

If the deciduous (baby) teeth are still in after the adult teeth have fully erupted, then they will need to be extracted by your veterinarian. Left in, they can push the adult teeth out of alignment, catch food and debris and promote infection. The teeth can be extracted while Turbo is anesthetized if he is to be neutered soon. This is common in smaller breeds but eaisly remedied and should cause no further issues once the baby teeth are out.
