My puppy is coughing, could it be hair stuck in his throat?

Hello, sorry to hear about Teddy. Given his breed, it sounds like he may have a common Yorkie disease called tracheomalacia or collapsing trachea. This happens when Yorkies have weak tracheal rings that cannot withstand the pressures of the windpipe on inspiration. This leads to a non-productive honking cough, sometimes referred to as a goose-honking cough. This disease however affects patients of middle to older age. Other causes of this may include kennel cough in young puppies, pneumonia, bronchitis, and even some heart conditions. A cough like the one you're describing in a little dog like Lace, I'd be worried about a collapsing trachea or congestive heart failure - both conditions are very common in little dogs and can cause dramatic coughs. Other possibilities would be kennel cough, pneumonia, allergies, and parasites. Hairballs are pretty uncommon in dogs, though bronchitis is possible if this were an allergic issue - but allergic coughs usually start at a younger age. With such dramatic onset, I definitely recommend having Lace seen by a vet, and anticipate they'll take chest x-rays to evaluate what's going on with her heart and lungs. Hope this helps.

I think it is unlikely that he has treat stuck in his throat. This happens very, very rarely and honestly, in 25 years I have never seen this happen. It would only really happen if there was a motility disorder with his esophagus. The esophagus could be irritated if the treat went down "sideways", sure, but based on his age and your description of the clinical signs, my best guess is that he has kennel cough. It is probably just coincidence that the coughing episodes started with the treat ingestion. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. If he has kennel cough he is contagious to other dogs.
