Why can't my puppy jump even though he shows no signs of pain?

It sounds like your dog has a problem with her back as that is a common sign of back pain. Dogs are usually reluctant to jump because it causes pain. Your vet can check her for back pain and then prescribe medications to help. She may need an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer, and/or pain medications to help. Also, it would be a good idea to restrict her activity for a few weeks, no running, jumping, etc. Hope she feels better soon!

To me this sounds like Echo is likely in some degree of pain. A change in activity is often a sign of pain. Most dogs don't actively whine or complain when they are uncomfortable or painful. If back or neck pain is present a dog won't always limp. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have medication prescribed by a veterinarian. I'm interpreting your question to mean Toby is having *problems* jumping...? This could be a sign of pain with an orthopedic issue, such as luxating patellas (kneecaps that shift out of their correct place) or intervertebral disc disease. It could also be a sign of lethargy if Toby is showing any other symptoms of illness such as a decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea. If this is a sudden change but Toby is acting completely normal otherwise, you may rest him for several days in case it's a minor injury - don't allow him to jump on/off furniture, carry him outside to urinate then right back inside, no rough play, etc. However, if it doesn't improve with a few days of rest, or if he's having any other symptoms, Toby should be seen by a vet to determine the problem and get him started on the appropriate treatment. Do not give him any medications without your vet's instructions, as no human pain medication is safe & effective for dogs, and anything you give could interfere with your vet's recommended therapy. Chihuahuas are prone to having luxating patellas which can cause pain when jumping. This can be a genetic problem and if it gets worse then he may need surgery to keep them in place. I recommend limiting the jumping by using pet stairs to the furniture, and keeping him on the thin side to protect his legs from carrying excess weight. As long as he’s not lame and not painful if you prevent him from jumping, then you can wait to have him examined. If he’s in constant pain or has a lameness then please take him in soon for a diagnosis and pain medication. This can be due to conditions such as a soft tissue injury, ligament conditions, a fracture and even a tumor. For this reason, I recommend that you have Jo evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. A veterinarian should be able to perform an examination and localize where the pain is so that further diagnostics like radiographs can be performed. Treatment will be highly dependent on what is causing the lameness. At the very least your veterinarian can start Jo on pain control medications to provide comfort. Poor Gigi! In many cases, reluctance to jump up onto furniture or onto an owner's lap is a sign of back pain, or arthritis in the hips or rear legs. This can be true even if she isn't crying or whining, as many dogs who are painful don't make any obvious sounds like this. I would recommend taking Gigi to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do a thorough orthopedic exam and may also recommend x-rays to help check for problems in her back or hips. If a problem is found, your vet can prescribe an anti-inflammatory or pain medication to help make her more comfortable so that she can get back to jumping on things the way she did before :)

Possibilities are a back strain or sprain, Lyme disease, or hip dysplasia. An exam and hip X-rays could help determine what might be going on.
