Can a puppy's broken jaw heal with a muzzle, avoiding costly surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 11 days old | 27.5 lbs

My lab puppy of 5 months got into a fight with my 6 year old German shepherd and he has broken his lower jaw from the growth plate. Being so young and the surgery costing so much, how likely is his jaw to heal by using a muzzle type wrap?

That really depends on the type of break. Some breaks may be able to heal without surgery, but a complicated fracture where the bone is broken into multiple pieces does require surgery. Only the vet who has seen Toby can make the bed determination as to whether or not it can heal without surgery. Because bone has broken from the growth plate, I would be concerned that it won't heal correctly and will affect the growth of the bones on his face. Due to that, I think surgery would be the best option.

Poor Toby! I'm so sorry that this happened - how awful. To answer your question, it really depends on the particular location of the fracture as well as how badly displaced it is - this would be a good question for the veterinarian who is treating him, since he/she has examined Toby and presumably taken x-rays to help evaluate the break. I can tell you that in my experience, tape muzzles are difficult to maintain during the healing process and produce very mixed results in terms of the long-term outcome - so if it were my dog personally, I would almost certainly opt for surgery unless it just wasn't financially possible.

If you want to get a better idea of your options, I would recommend asking for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon who can evaluate Toby and review his x-rays in person. He/she can tell you whether the fracture is likely to heal well with conservative management (such as a tape muzzle), or whether surgery will be needed to fix the problem.

Poor Peppie! It depends on where the fracture is, and whether it is displaced. I have had good luck with fractures of the mandibular symphasis (the very front of the bottom jaw) by having the dog wear a loose-fitting soft muzzle for ~6 weeks and feeding exclusively soft food. The muzzle would be loose enough for Peppie to lap water and soft food, but tight enough that he couldn't totally open his jaw and it would help stabilize. He would wear this 24 hours a day, including while eating and sleeping. Your vet will likely be familiar with this so I recommend calling and asking if this might help. It would only be beneficial for specific types of jaw fractures so it's important for your vet to give the go-ahead first, since they know the specifics of Peppie's fracture but I've had good success using this technique. Your dog needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. A broken jaw is very painful and the vet will be able to determine the extent of her injuries by taking X-rays and appropriate course of action. It is possible that surgery could fix it. It is very important that Lacey be seen and get her started on painkillers to keep her comfortable (as prescribed by your vet)

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy! Unfortunately it appears she has a tibial crest avulsion, and the treatment of choice is surgery if you want to have Bailey have the ability to use her leg normally. Unfortunately orthopedic surgeries do cost a great deal of money to perform and so vets have to charge accordingly. You can always see if there is a veterinary school in your area that may offer the surgery at a lower cost, but that isn't always a gaurantee.

My dog broke his front leg. Is surgery always required for a fracture?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A broken bone does not necessarily mean surgery is required. It depends on the type of fracture present. Some fractures can be casted and splinted, others require surgery or surgical placement of pins and plates if severe enough. The first step if you suspect Ace has a fracture is to have him seen by a veterinarian ASAP. Your veterinarian will need to take x-rays of the limb to determine whether or not it is broken, the type of fracture present, and how severe the break is. Your veterinarian will then put together a treatment plan for Ace based on what was found. I hope this helps!
