My puppy ate hair and is struggling to poop. What should I do?

"Flushing out" would involve enemas or inducing diarrhea, which is rarely indicated (and really unpleasant for you!). If it goes on for longer than 24 hours, it would be a good idea to have Skye evaluated by a vet to decide if treatment is indicated. Picking up hair and vacuuming is a great idea. Making sure her diet is balanced and contains fiber will help. Fish oil supplements may help with the passage of small amounts of hair.

Give Lilo some canned food and add water to it. You can also add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) to her food. I'd take her for a long walk, as exercise can stimulate the need to poop. If this doesn't help, then she will have to see a vet to get a laxative or enema. Yes it can cause issues with the intestines if he ingest large amount of hair, i'm still not sure where exactly he gets all these hairs from though. you could use a hairball paste for cats, that can help dissolving and passing the hair but obviously the hair ingestion is the main thing that you need to prevent from him to do.

Hello. It is very uncommon for puppies to have constipation, so I would be worried that maybe a piece of stick or mulch or bone (most common culprits) may be stuck in the colon or rectum. You can always look and if something is stuck try to gently manoeuvre it out, however be very careful not to cause a cut, as a cut in the bum is hard to heal due to the bacteria in the poop. If you are seeing something stuck it may be best to have it removed by a vet. If it is constipation, I would be switching the food that you are feeding to a better quality food. Canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin) is very good as well at increasing the fibre and helping with constipation. Also, if you are feeding any bones then stop this, and it could be that Boo has a colon full of re-formed bone bits and this will require a veterinarian to remove bit by bit, likely under anaesthesia. (yet another reason to never feed bones to dogs). I would overall recommend that Boo be seen by a vet as there could be many different things causing his issues. Good luck with Boo.

Poor girl! You can try to give her 1/2 teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice a day to help increase her fiber. Also make sure she is drinking enough water. You can add some warm water to her canned food if you need to. I hope this helps!

Please make sure Chloe is getting enough food so she’s not hungry, If she’s very active she may need three meals daily. If she eats very quickly at each meal and finishes it all right away then increase the amount at each feeding so she’s not as hungry at the next meal. Adding a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding will increase the fiber and make passing the stools easier. Then I would give her plenty of toys to chew on and play with, and teach her to fetch so she isn’t as interested in chewing and eating the roots. I would also,limit her time in that area so she can’t eat so many roots. She should outgrow this in a month or two.
