My 12-week-old puppy ate gabapentin. Do I need an emergency vet?

Gabapentin commonly causes signs such as lethargy and difficulty moving/disorientation. Peanut may need supportive care such as fluids, administered by a veterinarian if he develops these signs. In the meantime, I recommend keeping a very close eye on him, and having him seen by a vet right away if he develops the signs above. I hope all is well!

Gabapentin has quite a large safety margin, the maximum dosage is about 15mg per pound but even a higher dosage for a one time ingestion is not likely to cause any severe side effects. how much does you puppy weights?

Hi, Gabapentin overdose can cause sedation and drowsiness and its effect should gradually disappear over the next 12 hours. If Bunty is excessively sedated I would ring your closer vets to have her checked over. Hopefully she has not eaten it !

Gabapentin has a pretty wide dosage range, so even if you double the dose it is unlikely to be toxic. The most common symptom of too high a dose is sedation. If you need to break open the pills, a more effective way of making sure that Quinton gets all of the powder would be to mix it in a very small amount of wet dog food.

Nikolai should be okay as far as toxicity goes. 300mg is a lot but not at the point at which you would see liver toxicity or other adverse health problems. However, that being said, if he is still lethargic and acting abnormal, I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to establish a baseline as well. If Arya ate gabapentin, the most likely side effects you would see are sedation and ataxia (difficulty walking). Luckily there have been no serious safety issues reported in cats. You could also see some GI issues like vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. I hope this helps.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mia. Gabapentin has a very wide dosing range. The amount given will likely make her sedate, but should not cause her any long lasting harm. Give her next dose back on schedule if she is not too groggy. If so, you can wait an extra hour or two to give it more time to wear off. I hope this information helps!
