My puppy ate Bromethalin rat poison. Vet says fine, should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 2 days old | 19 lbs

My puppy 3 months old ate a 3 oz bag of rat poison with Bromethalin in it 2 days ago while I was at work. When I got home and seen what happened I looked up what to do I gave him Hydrin peroxide to make him vomit and even got some activated charcoal pills and the store, it was 8 when I got home and no vet around me was open. I finally found a er vet a hour away and brought him he stayed there for about 14 hours. And they said he should be fine. He is acting normal should I still worry?

I don't know all the details about his case and what his bloodwork looked like, but if the vet said he should be fine, then it appears everything checked out ok. I know how it is to worry about your pet and wanting extra confirmation that things are fine. Only at high doses are they considered lethal, and there would have been symptoms of a high dosage within 12 hrs of ingestion. If you have not seen any symptoms (i.e. hyperexcitability, hyperthermia, muscle tremors, hyperthermia, or seizures), then he did not receive a lethal dose of the toxin.
Low dose toxicity can cause delayed symptoms, which are 1-4 days post ingestion. These are typically managed with medications and supportive care.
Just keep an eye on Beau for the next 2 days for any changes and have them addressed by your vet asap. Otherwise, you can rest easy knowing that he likely did not ingest a lethal dose of the poison.

If she wasn't showing any signs of toxicity and started vitamin K right away, then most cases would do just fine. Also, it sounds like she didn't ingest enough to cause toxic effects if the company is correct. If you want to feel even more certain (in terms of amount ingested) you can call Animal Poison Control if you know the exact brand/concentration of the bait she ingested, then they can calculate the toxic dose needed to cause symptoms. There is a fee for their service. The number is (888) 426-4435. IT sounds, however, like you have nothing to worry about!

My dog ate rat or mouse poison yesterday. What should I do now?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Bromethalin is the new rat poison that causes neurologic damage to the mice resulting in death. There is no antidote for this poison. Lethal dose depends on HOW much Rotty ate compared to his weight. You need to call Pet Poison Control ASAP. If he ate it yesterday it is already out of his stomach and inducing vomiting will not help he has already absorbed it. If you induced vomiting yesterday and he brought it up then that is a good thing, but still call Poison Control!. Regardless of the dose ingested, it is recommended to at the very least start then on vitamin k which can help tremendously if in fact Roxy got anywhere near her toxic dose. This is an inexpensive and easy to implement therapy. She is not at a point that any effects are expected as it is too early in the course for that. I recommend that you have Roxy evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They could check her out and treat her accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

Will rat poison affect my dog if he ate pellets 24 hours ago?

While this rat poison has a different mechanism of action that has been advertised as being less harmful to dogs, it has been reported to cause issues in dogs including anemia, gastrointestinal upset, among other symptoms. For that reason, I would recommend that you contact the ASPCA poison control center as they specialize in the more uncommon toxicities in dogs and will have more information on how to proceed from here. Otherwise, have him evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can contact the poison control center for you and proceed with the treatment recommendations. This is time sensitive and he should be evaluated as soon as possible. I am hoping for a full recovery!

My dog ate rat poison. How long until she's safe from toxicity?

It can take between 1-7 days for signs of toxicity to occur, so you won't know if Bella is safe until about a week later. Keep an eye on her for signs of toxicity which include muscle tremors, hyper excitability, seizures, depression, hindlimb weakness, and ataxia. If you see any of those signs, rush her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Silly Camper! My primary concern is actually the status of the rat. If it was dead or lethargic, or if there has been rat bait placed anywhere Camper could have gone, you need to see your vet first thing in the morning for Rat Poison antidote. Taken as a preventative, it should prevent any problems from occurring. Rat Poison is often FATAL in dogs if not treated and early treatment is very successful. So if there is ANY possibility, please see your vet. Otherwise, continue to monitor Camper. As long as he remains playful and energetic, with normal stool and no vomiting, you do not have much cause for concern. If any of that changes, its time to see your vet. Marley will likely be fine now. I suggest you take her to your veterinarian for a coagulation panel in about 7 days, just in case some of the anticoagulant in the poison (if this was the anticoagulant type) dis get absorbed. Watch for signs of illness (neurological such as seizures, or increased thirst...there are a few other types of rat poison which can cause this) and if these occur, please take your dog to the vet. Apart from that, if all the poison was regurgitated within a relatively short time after ingestion, your dog should be fine.
