Is it normal for a pregnant dog to shiver and refuse breakfast?

I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian to have her examined. It's possible that she has gastroenteritis, an infection, or any number of other diseases. Your veterinarian can take her temperature and may recommend an ultrasound to check the puppies' heart rates and make sure they are not in distress. I typically recommend feeding a high quality puppy food to pregnant dogs, but your veterinarian might recommend trying a higher calorie therapeutic diet. Good luck!

Hello, congratulations on your new coming puppies. Its possible that she is beginning to have signs of initiating the first part of labor. During this time, their temperature may decrease and they may shiver. Keep an eye for any evidence of active contractions. If you are seeing contractions without production of a puppy that lasts longer then 2 hours, then she should be evaluated by her veterinarian immediately. If she seems lethargy, weak, and is not interested in food or water then she should be evaluated sooner. If she does deliver her puppies on her own, you may assist in cleanig the puppies and drying them so that they may begin to nurse shortly after birth. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Rainbow could have a fever causing the shivering and a respiratory infection causing the running nose. When a pregnant dog is sick, it is good for them to see a vet, but I would take her temperature first to decide if she needs to see a vet now or in the morning. A dog's normal temperature is 101-102.5F, and if Rainbow's is above 103F, I would have her seen by a vet now. Otherwise, keep her warm and comfortable tonight, gently warm wet food to tempt her to eat, and have her seen by a vet in the morning.

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Be sure to continue to monitor your pet as closely as possible and keep a close relationship with your local Veterinarian. There are many complications that can arise during pregnancy. This shivering and panting may be due to exertion. You'll want to be sure to provide her with plenty quiet time to rest and a very comfortable place lay down.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From what you are describing, there are 3 main possibilities. First, Charlie may be pregnant and about to have the pups. Second, she could be having pseudopregnancy, a condition where her body produces hormones as if she were pregnant though she has not conceived. Third, she could be having a condition called pyometra which is an infection within the utetus. There are other things that could be happening, but these three are by far the most likely. As pyometra is a very serious condition and can be life-threatening, I would recommend having Charlie examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible, preferably tonight by an emergency veterinarian. If you cannot get to an emergency vet tonight, go see your regular vet first thing in the morning. I hope this helps and that Charlie doesn't have anything too serious going on!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In general, I’m not worried about anything I’m seeing or hearing. The vulva is completely expected for a dog in heat. A few minutes of shivering/trembling can happen for many reasons but the fact that she went right back to playing and eating normally makes me not too concerned. In terms of helping her through the next several days or week of her heat cycle, there is nothing special to do. As you can see, she is basically the same as she always is.
