My pregnant dog has no milk. When should her glands start producing?

A normal healthy dog is pregnant for about 63 days before going into labor. If you know when she was bred you can count the days to see how far along she is. It can be normal to not be able to palpate the pups in her abdomen, especially if she is a big dog. It can also be normal for the mammary glands to leak a small amount of milk prior to the pups being born.

Based on those dates, Tara would be about 6 weeks pregnant at this point in time. A dog's gestation length is 58-68 days, with an average of 63 days. Typically you wouldn't see some milk at this stage of gestation, it's still a little early. You would see milk closer to her giving birth, or sometimes not at all. The only way to know for sure if she is pregnant is to have her seen by a your vet. The vet can do x-rays to confirm she is pregnant and can tell you how many puppies she is having. Do you mean 53 days pregnant? Dogs are pregnant for 63 days /- a few. If you are seeing milk from mammary glands, then she is very close to labor. I would monitor her, give her a comfortable, warm, quiet place to be able to go to. Once she begins labor, they usually can do it all on their own. The problem to watch for is if she is actively pushing for 20-30 min without any progress. If that occurs, get her to the ER Right away. It is normal to have times of rest, and blocks in between puppies but in those natural times there is no active pushing. Good luck.

If he belly wasn't big and she was producing milk she could be experiencing a false pregnancy. I would count back to when she was in heat. Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days. They do have a temperature drop most of the time BUT not always. It usually drops below 99 a few hours to 1 day before the start of labor. Dogs can start to product milk up to a week to a few days before labor. It is hard to feel the puppies move. If you want to confirm the number of puppies make a Vet appointment to have an X-ray taken to count the skeletons. Since she is so small it is good to talk to your Vet in case you run in to complications where you may require their help with delivery or a C-section. My guess is that she is due very soon, less than 7 days. I hope this helps!
