Is my muscular but skinny pit bull underweight for his breed?

Thanks for the question. The ideal weight for every dog is different, and unfortunately, obesity in pets is a big problem. We see so many overweight dogs that sometimes healthy dogs look too skinny! You should be able to lightly run your fingers across the body and feel Bubbs's ribs, but not be able to see them. He should have a waist when viewed from above, and his belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side. In your pictures I do not see any ribs, so he is definitely not underweight. He actually doesn't appear to be underweight based on the pictures shown. I'd have to examine him to be sure, but the biggest indication that he is not underweight is the fact that he appears to have well-developed muscles. Dogs of this breed tend to be naturally lean and put more weight on their muscles rather than their ribs, or belly. If I was concerned that he was underweight, then I would first want to rule-out a disease, or parasite causing him to lose or not gain weight. It's best to have a veterinarian evaluate him, so you can ensure he's healthy and ensure that you are not going to feed him unnecessarily. Gradual weight loss in an older large breed dog is usually the result of an underlying cancer (particularly intestinal) or an underlying intestinal parasite, or pancreas disorder (exocrine pancreatic disorder) just to name a few. I would start with baseline bloodwork and a fecal exam to get a big picture as to whath is most likely the underlying cause. If yo are not already doing so, feed a high quality diet. Avoid store or discount brands as these contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Mix in some canned food as well. You can warm it slightly or mix in warm water to stimulate the appetite. If Meemu still won't eat or fails to gain weight, have him physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any underlying medical causes. Neutering him may be part of the plan as well, since a neutered dog will gain some weight after surgery.

Pictures can be very deceiving and i recommend you use a body condition scoring chart (there are many versions online) to help assess and ask your vet nurse if you are unsure. Although he does not appear unhealthy, he is quite narrow across his back and core muscles. Be sure to maintain him on a good quality puppy food until 15mintgs and consider an assessment by a physiotherapist to ensure there are no underlying causes and to advise on suitable exercise. From the pictures he looks healthy but I would expect him to be at least 3 kg. I would recommend to feed him with a balanced and complete diet for puppies three times daily as per energy requirements (usually reported on the label).

At six months of age, he should still eat puppy food. Look at the side of the food bag for feeding recommendations. Keep in mind, these are typically too high for most dogs.
