My neighbor's puppy is overweight. What are the risks of overfeeding?

Wow, you are in a tough situation! It does sound like Diamond is extremely overweight, and that is not healthy for him at all. This can predispose him to joint problems, cardiac disease, and diabetes. He does have to lose weight. I'm wondering if you can get your grandmother to take him to the vet (and you go along with her). The vet will definitely let her know that Diamond is overweight, and she might be more receptive to hearing that from a vet as opposed to a family member. The bowls of treats have to go, that's just making the problem worse. Maybe you can phrase to your grandmother that you are worried she will trip over the bowls and that's why they should be put up. He also does need to go on walks, and maybe with a vet's help, you can convince her to allow you to take him on walks. I'm sure he is a beloved companion to your grandmother, and maybe if you and the vet point out that this excessive weight can cut short his life span, having that knowledge may make her open to getting him to lose weight so he lives longer. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Benji. Being over weight is one of the most common problems that I see in pets. So great job on recognizing this and wanting to be pro-active! If you need to feed your dogs together, supervise them at meal times so they can only eat their allotted portions. Measure each dog's food with a measuring cup so you know exactly what is being fed. The next big thing is adequate exercise. I would recommend at least one walk per day increasing as he is comfortable. A good goal is several miles per day depending on his current fitness level. If you are not making progress there are prescription weight loss diets that are very effective. I hope this information helps!

This type of severe weight loss is known as cachexia and is usually associated with a bad disease such as cancer, diabetes or kidney failure. The swollen toe could possibly be a tumor. It sounds like your neighbor needs to take the dog to the vet soon. It would be good to approach your neighbor respectfully and let them know that you are very concerned about the dog. They may have taken him to a vet already and know what's going on. If they don't know what's going on and consider it a normal part of aging, then let them know that a veterinarian told you it could be one of the serious diseases I mentioned. If they still seem hesitant, then you may offer to take her, or offer to take her to a shelter (she would have to sign the surrender forms though). However, if you don't think your neighbor will respond well, you may consider calling Animal Control. That way you can remain anonymous and the officer can find out if there is a neglectful situation going on. 1 common reason is selecting an adult food when your pet is technically a senior dog. Make sure Chaos is eating mature/senior version of the brand food you are buying. Also I would try to start feeding your pets in 2 separate bowls if not done so already, and taking a little extra effort to keep their food bowls separate until they get used to the transition. I would only put down about 1/3-1/2 cup food twice daily so maybe a hair less than what you are currently doing. Splitting up the food into 2 meals is ideal for weight loss and maintenance, instead of 1 large meal. Also the begging strips are likely a large source of the fat content. I would limit these to 2-3 times a week and perhaps only 1/2 of the beggin strip. Other less fattening treats are milk ones or dental chews (Virbac dental chews). I know Hills, Purina and Royal Canin all have good products, but don't know of any other. The best thing to check on the bag is the AAFCO statement, which is just below the guaranteed analysis. I would feed her according to the instructions on her bag of food, but I would divide it into three equal portions to feed her three times a day. I don't worry about puppies being fat, especially if they are very active. They are growing, and they don't need to be a diet. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Weight loss is something I discuss multiple times a day. While excercise is helpful, I find diet to be by far the most effective tool. First, if he is free-fed, you’ll want to switch to two measured meals per day. And I do mean use an actual measuring cup every time. For a 100lb dog, start with about 3 cups twice daily. If he is already getting a set amount, decrease that amount by about 25% (ie, go from 6 cups a day to about 4.5 cups per day). Try that for a month. If no weight loss, it’s time to look into a medical reason like hypothyroid or Cushings disease so see your vet for that. Finally, I try a prescription diet like Hills Metabolic diet which actually upregulates genes responsible for metabolism. It is very effective when other diets have failed. Of course, watch out for people food and treats of course. Choose green beans, carrots, or celery. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Dudley!
