Why is my overweight Rottweiler so tired on walks? Is it his food?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 92 lbs

Hi there! I have a 4yr. old rottweiler I rescued from the shelter. He seems to be in good health but he gets tired really fast. Every sunday we go to dog walking class and half way he's already panting and ready to laydown. All the other dogs are fine. I was wondering why he gets tired so fast and if I should change his diet to half kibble/raw. He's about 95lbs ,trying to get him down to about 90lbs. Eats Canidae now..will changing his food give him more energy? What would you recommend?

I must say that I love the name of your pet. It is very unique.

The question that needs to be answered is whether the getting tired is due to your dog possibly being overweight or if he has a medical condition that is causing him to get lethargic during the walks.

So before you start decreasing the food or changing the food to a diet, I urge you to make an appointment with your regular veterinarian to have a complete physical examination performed. Things like cardiac disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism, etc. can all cause dogs that are similar in size and breed to exhibit the symptoms yours is displaying.

The vet will probably need to run a few tests like a full CBC chemistry profile, thyroid hormone analysis, urinalysis, and possibly x-rays of the chest and abdomen. I realize that this may seem like a lot but trust me it is always better to error on the side of caution. And if all of these tests come back normal, you will have a great baseline to go by if he ever experiences any sickness in the future.

I would consider putting him in a prescription diet food like science diet metabolic or science diet R/D. I would also take him for slow steady walks daily if possible. Getting him to lose weight will make him feel like a totally different dog. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rox. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He should be seen today if ar all possible. His symptoms are vague, but worrisome in a dog of his age. The veterinarian will examine him and determine if he is perhaps experiencing orthopedic pain or an internal issues. Testing such as blood work or x-rays may be warranted. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help him feel better. In the meantime, help him when he needs to move. You can use a towel under his hips as a sling to him get up and to walk. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Why is my dog gaining weight, tired, and struggling to breathe?

I would recommend that Rex have a thorough checkup with a vet. Gaining weight and lethargy can be a symptom of hypothyroidism, which can be confirmed easily with a blood test. However, the shortness of breath has me a little concerned that there could be heart or lung disease also at play. Heart disease can cause fluid build-up in the lungs or abdomen, which can easily be confused for weight (fat) gain. After thorough examination, the vet may recommend bloodwork to check for internal medical illness, and x-rays or ultrasound to see what is going on inside the body. After your vet has a better idea of the cause of Rex's symptoms, then an appropriate treatment plan can be discussed.

Why is my 3-year-old Rottweiler struggling to walk and falling?

It's difficult to say exactly what's going on without examining him, but it could be due to a couple different things: 1) Arthritis - we usually see this in older dogs, but he may have had some growth abnormalities that caused him to get arthritis early. The best thing you can do for this is make sure he stays thin. A fat dog will be more prone to problems. This can cause them to not walk properly and lay around more than normal. This would have to be diagnosed by a veterinarian and require more specific treatment. Kanuke does look overweight in the picture, and he could have really hurt himself on the walk. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

You may be feeding Bruno more calories than he can feasibly burn.
