How many calories should my overweight Chihuahua eat to lose weight?

The general rule is to feed 1 cup of dry food per 30lbs body weight. Using this formula, Toki should get 1/4 cup of food twice daily. Alternatively, you could feed one Cesar's portion twice daily and discontinue the dry food. Allowing him to graze in the evening may lead to overeating and weight gain. You can adjust the amount of food based on his body weight and his BCS (body condition score). Your veterinarian can show you how to assess a BCS. Ideally, Toki should have an hourglass figure when looked at from above. From the side, he should have a pronounced abdominal tuck. He should not be rectangular. You should be able to easily feel his ribs under a thin layer of fat as well.

Good for you for trying to help Dyego lose weight! This will definitely help him to stay healthy as he gets older. Ideally, I would recommend a prescription weight loss diet from your veterinarian, such as Purina OM or Royal Canin Calorie Control. These diets are very effective, and have a chart to show how much you should feed each day based on your dog's target weight. These can also be ordered online from Chewy.com or other online pet retailers if you prefer - just let your vet know so that they can approve the prescription :)

Before cutting down on her food, I would try limiting her treats. They are loaded with fat and have relatively few nutrients. From this photo, it is apparent that she has a "waistline." which is good. If when you run your hands down her sides you can't feel her ribs, she is too heavy. (If you can see her ribs, she is too thin.) Calories are not the only factors in a dog's weight gain or loss. Remember fat, too! Spayed females may be less active and more prone to weight gain, but it doesn't have to be this way. How about throwing a ball or Frisbee for her to chase? Finding another dog for her to play with? Perhaps a dog park (well-supervised!)? Good luck with trimming Chloe down a bit!

Hello. This is a great question! She should be eating about 500 -550 calories PER DAY which includes all food and treats. She can eat any food as long as she stays inside that calorie window. If you feed her a lower calorie diet then she will get to eat more food and be less hungry. Just check the bag, it will tell you how many calories per cup. There is no evidence that grain free foods promote weight loss in dogs, and unless there is a medical reason to avoid grains I don't recommend feeding these diets. Reducing calorie intake is necessary for weight loss, although increasing exercise can help as well. You can either talk to your vet to help estimate Tasha's ideal body weight and calculate approximately how many calories she should be eating in a day to promote weight loss, or you can try reducing the total amount of food she is getting in a day by 25%. Remember treats and chews have calories too - think of every treat as a piece of candy and try to minimize them as much as possible or replace them with a healthier alternative like a frozen green bean.

Her portions should be about 3/4 a cup a day to start... a little less if she gets treats. You can start slow with exercise with just making her go up and down the stairs an extra time or a short walk around the house until she gets better and gradually increase it
