OTC alternative for overweight dog on urinary diet, always hungry?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 5 months old | 27 lbs

Is there an otc dog food/ natural alternative to a urinary so? My dog is 10 is now 5lbs over weight and thinks she's starving 24/7. She begs for food almost all day long. She has had UtI's and then bladder stones as a result but seems to be fine on the Urinary SO besides the fact that she is now a 27 lb shitzu with knee problems. I walk her 1 to 1.5 hrs a day (2 walks) which is all her knees can handle. I need to get some weight off. What are my options? I can't decrease her food servings.

To my knowledge, there are no current OTC diets formulated for dogs with urinary issues. These diets are designed to alter the pH in such a way to keep the urine at a certain level. Her current diet does not explain her weight and appetite despite being fed a normal diet. I would be interested in seeing what her current blood work looks like, and would want to investigate some potential causes for these symptoms you are seeing. It is possible Roxy could be developing several different endocrine disorders. If you are seeking to change her food and still need it to be appropriate for a dog with urinary problems, I would consider consulting with a veterinary nutritionist. You can usually find these professionals through veterinary schools. They will typically offer consultations for extremely reasonable costs, as they primarily function in the research circle. The nutritionists through my vet school ,Virginia Maryland College of Vet Med, would probably be happy to assist you if you emailed them with your concerns. Hope you figure things out and consider getting some diagnostics done on Roxy.

You can try science diet senior light formula with small bites as an option or try one of their prescription formulas such as metabolic. Purina also makes a prescription type called OM and has severe reduced calorie over the counter options. You will need to really regulate the amount of food she receives in a day more than anything. You can switch her potty treat to Cheerios--they are small and have few calories to add up. For a 10# dog to lose weight, you are looking at feeding her a little less than 1/2 cup of food a day total. It is not much, so you want to really measure it with a measuring cup. You can try to increase her activity level and play with her and add in walks to also help burn calories

What affordable dry food for an overweight dog with low urine pH?

While a urine pH of 5 is considered low, I don't know that you need to make a diet change unless Rylee has a history of lower urinary disease. The urine pH can also vary greatly throughout the day and it may be that her urine is at 5 for only a short period of time. If a prescription diet has been recommended for urinary disease then unfortunately there is not a comparable over the counter diet available right now. If you are looking for a food to encourage weight loss you may want to try to find a food that is lower in calories, or if Rylee is doing well on her current diet you may need to simply cut back on the food offered (and be sure to also cut back or eliminate treats and chews which can be a hidden source of calories). I typically recommend foods by Hill's, Purina, and Royal Canin since they have veterinary nutritionists on staff and perform feeding trials. They also tend to have more quality control measures in place compared to smaller pet food companies. Hill's Perfect Weight food has 270 kCal per cup compared to Taste of the Wild's 364 kCal per cup.

My dog has bladder stones. Can I buy cheaper food at the store?

Unfortunately there are no over the counter that will help dissolve stones once they form. There are diets that claim to encourage urinary bladder health, however there are no clinical trials to substantiate those claims. What Scooby really needs right now is the Rx food, although it is a bit costly and I can sympathize with that. However it works and is effective because the necessary trials were done to formulate the food properly. It can take several months to even a year to dissolve the stones depending on the quantity and size.

My dog needs urinary food but is picky. What are my options?

It can be tricky when our pets are picky eaters! I recommend talking to your vet about this, as there are many different possible urinary prescription diets that can help prevent her from getting future stones. If she doesn't like her current diet, there are many other brands with equally good urinary foods, and perhaps she'd find a different food more palatable. I cannot offer specific recommendations without knowing what types of stones she has a history of developing, but I'm sure your regular vet would be happy to talk to you about other prescription foods you could try. Even if they don't regularly keep the foods stocked in their clinic, they could provide a prescription for you to buy the food either online or from another vet clinic. I *do* strongly recommend keeping her on a prescription food - as you said, you don't want to risk a recurrence of stones or chronic UTI's. Hope this helps!

How to save on my dog's expensive prescription urinary diet?

If you are buying the prescription diet directly from your vet I would recommend looking at an online pet pharmacy to see if they carry the food. Often times these places can offer bulk discounts to purchasing cans and may also have a lower price available than your vet can offer. Your vet can send in the prescription for you so that you can then purchases there. Some other brands such as Royal Canin, Eukanuba and Pro Plan also offer prescription urinary diets so if Science Diet is too expensive, you may want to price shop and see if the other prescriptions available would work.
