Is 20% carbohydrates in Orijen dog food enough for my dog's health?

Limited ingredients diets are recommended for dogs that have or may have food allergies or sensitivities. Some pet parents choose to feed limited ingredient diets to their dogs to avoid preservatives and fillers.

Scientific research has shown that an adult dog's daily diet can contain up to 50% carbohydrates by weight, so 25% is not too many carbs for Chloe. I'm not sure where you have heard that more carbs are not good for Golden Retrievers, but as long as the carb amount of her diet is kept to 50% or below daily, that is perfectly fine. I had a Golden Retriever, and I did not feed her a reduced carb diet at all and she lived to 12 years of life with rarely having any health problems.

In my personal opinion Orijen is the best commercial food on the market or at the very least a top 5 food, i have been using it for my pets for many years and have been recommending it for years as well.

I don't recommend to feed this food. All life stages food is not developed specifically for puppies. That means it may not contain the best amounts of DHA and other supplements needed for brain, nerve and bone development. Additionally, due to a suspected link with heart disease, most veterinarians do not recommend feeding a grain free diet. Grains very rarely are a cause of allergies in pets. Instead feed a puppy food from a diet that is balanced. Many quality brands include Royala Canin, Science Diet and Purina ProPlan. Hello. Most dog food companies do a very good job balancing nutrients, and as long as your pet has a happy, healthy digestive system, this food should be fine for him. Most veterinarians encourage people to stick with the bigger well known companies, such as Hill's, Royal Canin & Purina, but I do not know of any issues with the Origen brand. So, do not worry about the protein levels in the food at this time. Concern yourself more with keeping Remy at a healthy weight as he continues to age. Hi and thanks so much for your post this afternoon. 18-20% protein should be just fine if Chloe is a lightly active dog. 25% protein would be better for more active dogs (such as dogs that do agility or are working dogs). Too much protein isn't good for dogs, and it's recommend they have 18% of their diet be protein. Now some dogs, such as working dogs, require higher amounts of protein due to their increased caloric demands. In addition, too much protein in dogs can lead to weight gain. Now too much protein per say doesn't cause health issues, but if a dog has a pre-existing health condition like kidney or liver disease, too much protein is not good for them because it increases the workload of those organs. Low carb diets are bad, yes. Totally unnecessarily. Brands of grain free diets try to sell you their diets by claiming outrageous things like it's the diet of their ancestors, the wolves. Todays dogs are so far removed from the wolf, it's not even funny. When was the last time you saw a pack of pugs take down a deer in the wild???
