My old dog has skin tumors. How do I know when to say goodbye?

I think that if the mass is getting traumatized, is bleeding or infected or if it appears painful to her then it might be time. Especially if removing it isn't an option. Otherwise, if she is eating, drinking, not in pain, the mass isn't bleeding, she interacts with the family and can control her urine and defecation then I would give her more time. I always tell owners to measure the good and bad days and when the bad days out weigh the good then it is likely time. I hope this helps and I wish you and Brie the best!

This is an extremely difficult decision to make. I always try to look at a dog's quality of life to determine if they are still able to do most of the things they've always loved. If they are unable to do half of their favorite things, it is likely that their overall quality of life has declined and euthanasia may be warranted. Since your dog is currently eating, drinking, acting and playing normally, it does not sound as though her time has come. However, since one of her masses ruptured, there is a chance that it could become infected. Ideally, the mass would be surgically removed and biopsied. If surgery is not an option, she may need a course of antibiotics to prevent the onset of infection in the open lesion. If the open mass continues to bleed or begins to cause discomfort, you may need to decide if she should have surgery or euthanasia. If you are beginning to question if the time for euthanasia has arrived, consider discussing this with your vet to get their take since they have examined your dog and can provide some insight into her current quality of life. It can be hard to say without seeing Sophie first, but if you notice Sophie is having more bad nights/bad days than good restful nights/good days, then it may be time to consider end of life care. Deciding when to euthanize a beloved pet is never easy and there often isn't a clear cut, black and white answer. Instead, we're left with a lot of maybes, what ifs, and gray areas. I think it's important to consider Bugger's overall quality of life. Namely, can he still do most of the things that he always used to enjoy? That may have meant chasing a bell ball or laser pointer, jumping onto a sunny perch, or following you around the house. If he's struggling to do many of his favorite things, that's a good indication that his quality of life isn't what it used to be. Eating and drinking are all well and good, but that doesn't always tell the whole picture. Based on your description, I simply don't have enough information in order to guide you one way or the other. Instead, I think it's important for you to try to take a step back and objectively assess Bugger. I recommend making a list of five things Millie loved to do, and if she is no longer doing at least two of them, then her quality of life has declined to a point where humane euthanasia should be considered. Her quality of life is most important to evaluate when making the decision as to whether or not to let a dog go peacefully. Dogs can be very stoic about pain, and they could be worse off than they are letting on. I would make that list of five things and look at Millie's quality of life to help you make that decision. I'm sorry Ben has an anal tumor! Your vet is right that he will be pain, even if he doesn't act like it. Dogs can be very stoic about pain, and he is also showing you he is in pain from his arthritis based on the fact that he moves around slowly and can't get up stairs well. I recommend making a list of five things Ben loved to do. When he's not doing at least two of them, then his quality of life has declined to a point when humane euthanasia should be considered. Also consider his quality of life if he starts having trouble passing feces due to the size and location of the tumor. In the meantime, I would discuss giving him pain meds with your vet. This may improve his quality of life in terms of getting around and help with the pain from the tumor.
