Why is my old dog pacing, hiding, and won't come inside at night?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 15 years old | 29 lbs

Hello, I have a male Staffordshire bull terrier, 15 years old. He always comes inside during the evening to sleep in the bedroom. Last night, he refused to come in, he wanted to be outside, in the middle of the night. He has been restless all through the night and still has not come in, he is pacing around in the garden and trying to hide behind the shed and under objects. He doesn't appear to be in pain. I am not aware if he has eaten or drank, it appears that he has not.

Hello there!

In dogs, reclusive behavior and pacing are signs of pain. I would recommend taking Spud into a vet to be seen as soon as possible to investigate what could be bothering him. The vet will likely recommend bloodwork and x-rays to initially start and then guide treatment off of those findings.

I hope this helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
