My old dog is breathing heavy, shaking, and won't play. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 12 years old | 75 lbs

I have a 12 year old pitbull for the past 2 days it has seems he has a dry mouth and has been breathing heavier then normal. Also he shakes a bit when inhaling and is always trying to lick something. He doesn't want to play or go outside much and if he does only for a few minutes until he is back to laying down. I often have to life him to get him to move, but when he stands he looks at me shaking a little with his tail in his legs. He did have a ear infection that came back. Please help.

Max sounds like he is very ill and he likely has an internal illness or organ malfunction that is causing his overall lethargy, heavy breathing (can be a sign of pain, underlying lung disease, heart disease or infection) and unwillingness to move. This sounds serious and there isn't much you will be able to help him with at home, he needs to be seen by your vet. For an older dog I worry about things that may not be treatable and also major illness that can take its toll if not identified quickly and treated quickly. He likely needs bloodwork analysis and chest radiographs to start. Once his underlying illness has been properly identified then the vet can discuss treatment options with you, if available. I am so sorry that Max is so ill, but the next best thing is to take him in and make a decision concerning his quality of life and likelihood of having a positive outcome with treatment. I am so sorry that Max is doing so badly! He does sound extremely ill, and I recommend getting him into another vet for a second opinion. Without seeing him in person, I can't say if there are any options for treatment, but another vet may have suggestions of things to try. I can say that from your description, he is extremely ill and unfortunately there may not be anything that can be done for him. It's very serious he won't eat, and the bloated abdomen and trouble breathing could be due to something like severe, end stage heart disease or cancer. With those symptoms, letting him go peacefully may be the best and kindest option for him. But first take him into another vet immediately for a second opinion. I would take Ollie into a vet right away. As a senior dog, there could be serious causes to his symptoms, such as cancer, organ disease, respiratory disease, or heart disease. He needs to be examined by a vet to determine what is causing his symptoms so he can be treated.

My new dog has abnormal breathing, paw infection, and skin issues. What's wrong?

Poor Max! The problem is that he cannot talk tell you why this is happening. It sounds like he is experiencing a multitude of problems. Additionally, the abnormal breathing could indicate a serious health condition. I recommend to have Max examined by his veterinarian today to start figuring out what is wrong. Only a physical examine can start to narrow down the reasons. Bring in a fresh stool sample as well in case the doctor wants to test for parasites. Why is my dog breathing fast and tilting his head? Is it serious?

Max needs to see his veterinarian today. An increased respiratory rate is never normal and is concerning for heart failure, significant pain, primary lung disease, cancer or pneumonia. All of these conditions require treatment. The veterinarian will take a listen to heart chest and may recommend some radiographs to see the heart and lungs. The ear is not likely related to the respiratory rate unless it is causing significant pain. Mites are possible but yeast and bacterial infections are more common. The doctor will exam the ear as well to get an idea of the cause. I hope he starts feeling better and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My dog is bloated, slow, shaking, and can't jump. Is vet care urgent?

I am sorry to hear that Max isn’t feeling well. So many different problems could be causing the signs you are seeing. Some of those are urgent and some of them are not. If the bloating seems to have occurred quickly (like over a few hours), and his decrease in energy has as well then I am more concerned. I worry about the possibility of a bleeding abdominal tumor or possibly a stomach torsion. However less concerning problems such as Cushings or thyroid disease could be at fault as well. Judging from your description of the symptoms you are seeing, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Max so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My old dog is 15, won't eat, can't stand, and has stomach cramps. What's wrong?

I would recommend that Max get checked out by a vet. His symptoms to not fit with any single disease or issue, but it could be caused by pain from arthritis, muscle problems, neurologic disease, intestinal issues (blockage, cancer, inflammation, infection), internal medical issues (liver or kidney disease), or something else. After thorough physical examination, the vet will probably recommend bloodwork and maybe x-rays to determine what could be the cause of his symptoms.
