My new puppy: When can I bathe him, what food, and biting concerns?

First, I would make sure that Chip is eating a puppy formulated food. Puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than adult dogs to support their growth, and a puppy formulated food would give him that. I would feed him a high quality puppy formulated food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet, and I would feed according to the instructions on the package. As for biting, it is important to stop him from biting and learn that is not appropriate to bite you. When he bites you, do tell him no, but then distract him with a chew toy. Praise him when he starts chewing on that instead, and he will learn that the toy is ok to chew on and not you. You can also try yelping loudly as if you are hurt when he bites you, and that should startle him into stopping. Once he stops, praise him and give him a treat. You can also try time outs. When Chip bites you, yelp loudly, and then remove your hand. Ignore him for 10-20 seconds, and once that time passes, start playing with him again. If he tries to bite you again during the 10-20 seconds, move away, and continue to ignore him. Once the time is over, then you can play with him again. This will teach him that when he plays gently, play continues, and once he bites, play stops.

Tiger needs to get his vaccines as soon as possible. A puppy should first get them when they are 6-8 weeks old, and needs a total of three series of them spaced four weeks apart so they are fully vaccinated at 14-16 weeks of age. I recommend having Tiger seen by a vet as soon as possible to get his first series of vaccines. Because he is older when he's first having them done, he will only need a booster of them in four weeks, and then he will need to be revaccinated in a year. As for training, I would put him into a puppy preschool or work with a professional behavioral expert when he is vaccinated. That will teach him how to interact appropriately with humans and other animals, and you will learn basis commands for him. In terms of nutrition, he should be fed a puppy formulated food. I recommend Hills Science diet or Royal Canin. He should be fed three times a day (morning, noon, evening) until he is six months old, and then he should be fed twice a day. Feed him according to the instructions on the food label, and divide the daily recommended amount into three equal portions.

If you feel like your puppy is weaker than her should be at this age then I recommend taking him to the veterinarian to be examined. He may have intestinal parasites (very common in young puppies) or could have something more serious like parvovivrus. You should also make sure he is fully vaccinated. Your veterinarian can give you a schedule of when he needs what vaccines. He should also be vaccinated for rabies at 12-16 weeks of age. Your puppy should be eating a large breed puppy food. For puppies, I recommend feeding three times daily. Make sure you are feeding enough food as well. The food you are using should tell you how much to feed him. The biting is behavioral and is a common behavior in puppies. I would recommend using a small spray bottle and every time he bites you, spritz him in the face to deter him from biting. Using puppy pads, with patience and persistence, he will learn to go to the bathroom outside. Gradually move the puppy pad closer and closer to the door that leads to the outside until eventually, the puppy pad is outside for him to use. I hope this helps! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Romeo is adorable! I like Purina, Hills, Iams/Eukanuba and Royal Canin pet foods. He should eat kitten food for the first year. The biting is normal kitten behavior and goes away with time. Just stop playing with him when he starts biting. As for the fleas, until he is 8 weeks or older, all you can do is bath him in Dawn and manually pick the fleas off. Once he is 8 weeks you can buy Frontline or Revolution to use topically for fleas. If you are seeing pieces of rice around his bottom that is likely tapeworm segments. Fleas are the intermediate host for tapeworm. When you go to the Vet bring a stool sample. Tell them about the tapeworms, he will need a specific dewormer for them. He will also be dewormed for round worms, be Feline Leukemia and FIV tested and receive his first FVRCP vaccine. He gets the FVRCP vaccine every 3-4 weeks until about 3-4 are given. The Rabies is given around 12-16 weeks. He can be neutered at 6 months. I hope this helps and I wish you and Romeo the best!
