Why does my neutered dog arch his back? Neuter side effect or injury?

It sounds like your vet did all the right things. You could do a urine culture as a double check for an infection (although that would be very uncommon in an adult male dog). I would be starting to get concerned about a tumor within the penis or possibly a neuromuscular issue preventing normal urine flow. If your vet is out of ideas (as I am), the next step would be going to a specialist, probably an internist.

Since he has not improved after seeing your veterinarian, I recommend that you have Romeo reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Romeo feel better. Poor Oreo! He may be limping due to trauma resulting in a fracture or sprain, back issues, or nerve damage. Unneutered dogs are more likely have certain infections that cause infection of the vertebra and prostate enlargement which can cause discomfort, but it is not certain that this is related to the limping. I recommend having Oreo seen by a vet as soon as possible for x-rays to determine if there are any fractures and appropriate treatment. Constantly dry heaving and trying to vomit are signs that your pup probably needs to see his doctor. Tail down and trying to reach his rear aren't complications of a neuter-they are a normal reaction to pain in the area. Please keep on his e collar (or "cone") at all times so that he cannot reach this area as it can get very swollen and painful if he is agitating it right after surgery. Hope this helps!

It's been about 10 days since Murphy's surgery, so he should be pretty well healed and not in pain. He may be bored. I hope you have only been giving pain medications prescribed by the vet. If you have been giving him human pain medications, that may be the problem as many of those are toxic to dogs. If you have been giving him human pain medications, take him into a vet now.

As long as there is no bleeding from the incision and the incision looks healthy and not infected, i would not worry about these very minor side effects, give it a few days and everything will probably go back to normal.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Roman. His incision site appears to be healing with only mild bruising and swelling associated with it. I do not see any appears that are opening in your picture. It would be unusual for him to still be painful a week after surgery. The collar may be bothering him, but if his behavior does not resolve, then I would check in with his veterinarian. If you are able to fully supervise him, you can try to take the collar off for a little bit. This will help you judge if the collar is causing the change in behavior. Whenever he is alone or not fully supervised though be sure that he is wearing it. I hope this information helps!
