It also can be that he now sees she is weak and he wants to take over being the top dog. This can be dangerous as he could fight with her and hurt her so you are right to keep them separate when you are not there to monitor their behavior. If your younger dog is well trained I would make it clear to him that this is inappropriate behavior by your voice and placing him in a crate or outside when he exhibits this behavior. That said, if this is linked to your dog being in heat, keeping the two separated during her heat cycle may help reduce the behavior and prevent a fight from breaking out. Having your female spayed may also help reduce the aggressive behavior if it is related to her heat cycle as she will no longer have them. If the behavior continues to escalate, keeping the two dogs apart and speaking with a trainer in person is best so that they can address the issue and provide a more tailored plan. Picking up and keeping any and all toys, etc removed during this as well as feeding the dogs separately may also help reduce the behavior as well.

Hi there. Actually, yes! To reasons not always know to us-changes in the hormonal makeup of our animals (i.e. a recent neuter) can make them smell different. Many theories have been postulated as to why previously accepting partners will turn away the new "smell" and show aggression. Many think it is frustration in the change. Some think it is because they now want to show dominance. Often, we do not ever really know for sure. Normally with time the pair will acclimate again, but I usually recommend supervised playtime until then. I hope this helps!

Dogs can react to stress in their owners and the dogs maybe grieving the loss themselves as well. This can lead to behavior changes such as anxiety and aggression. Given the severity of the behavior changes, I would recommend that Lucy is seen by a veterinarian to ensure there is not an underlying medical condition. Once Lucy is deemed healthy, your veterinarian may recommend a trial of an anti-anxiety medications such as Prozac. It also may be worthwhile to contact a trained animal behaviorist in your area. They can evaluate the interactions between the dogs and may be able to offer a plan to help get the dogs back on track.
