Is a Labrador Retriever a safe and gentle dog breed for my family?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your potential dog. I recommend a labrador retriever. They are wonderful family dogs, highly trainable and very loyal. They have a high energy level so will require a considerable amount of exercise. They are happy go lucky dogs, but can be protective of their families. I hope this information helps!

However, generally both Shepherd type dogs and Labradors tend to be good dogs for large families. In terms of possible health issues, it is the same thing, it is hard to predict how a mixed breed dog is going to turn out. However, both Shepherd type dogs and Labradors tend to be more prone to issues like hip dysphasia, cancer, laryngeal paralysis, among some other conditions. Good luck and have a great day! Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Labrador Retrievers are incredible dogs that sometimes love everybody. They do not always make the best watch dogs. But, he is still very young, & when he matures, he may become more protective of his home & bark more. Otherwise, remember, people can be very wary of large dogs, & this may be enough to keep people out. Take care.

Those breeds are calm, not aggressive and good with other dogs in general, two GSD is in most cases asking for troubles, when together they could get out of control and even become aggressive toward each other, strangers, other dogs or even family members.

Hi there. I do not recommend this breed for anyone who is not an experienced dog owner, as in my experience they are often aggressive and difficult to manage even with good training and socialization. If your mom wants a dog for companionship, I would recommend a Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever - both of these breeds are wonderful companion dogs, and are much less likely to have serious behavior issues to manage.
