My dog has ticks, Frontline failed. How can I kill them safely?

I would suggest Frontline Plus. It is safe and effective when applied properly and does not go systemic as some other preventatives. It stays in the layers of the skin. If your dog has seizures, start a Seizure Log. Note the time of day, activity, meds, diet or anything happening around the time of each seizure. This will help you and your vet pinpoint potential triggers.

He needs a tick preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, or even Advantix over the counter can kill ticks quickly and prevent them for 30 days. Please get him on a tick preventative soon and visit your vet soon if you notice any symptoms of tick bite disease (i.e. anorexia, lethargy, fever or lameness). You should also avoid areas that he could be exposed to with high tick populations. Keep him out of the woods and consider getting your yard treated for. Please do not feed garlic to your dog, it can cause blood disease in dogs! Here are instructions for flea prevention: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. I’m unsure what products you have in the U.K., but some of my favorite products are Credelio, Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica. These are all oral products that will prevent fleas as well as kill the ones on your dog. I hope that helps!

I occasionally see toxicity issues with some of the over-the-counter topical flea products like Hartz, Sergeant's, etc. - this is more commonly a problem in cats, but can sometimes be an issue with small dogs as well, especially if they've been dosed above their weight range. All of the prescription flea/tick medications currently on the market (Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, etc.) are quite safe and effective.

Fleas are very small jumping parasites. They will leave black flecks on the pet known as flea dirt. Ticks are larger, usually brown in color and attach themselves to a pet in order to draw blood.
