How do I increase protein in my dog's diet for optimal nutrition?

Eukanuba is an excellent food. In my professional opinion, I don't think you need to worry too much about that 1%. You can add a hard boiled egg to the food for an easy way to add protein, probably once every other day would be fine. Or, ask your vet if he/she has a preference for a supplemental protein source since they made the 30% protein recommendation. Thank your asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach !

Pete is a cutie! Individual pets' protein requirements will vary depending on their health status. For example, very active working dogs may need a higher-protein diet than a normal household dog. Also, pets with kidney disease or other health conditions may need a protein restricted diet. If Pete is an average healthy pet dog any dog food that is labeled for maintenance feeding will be adequate. If Pete has specific health conditions such as food allergies or kidney disease, please consult with your veterinarian before changing his diet.

So a bit of clarification- Having a somewhat increased protein level on bloodwork is uncommonly a problem and usually ignored - it usually just indicates mild dehydration. So maybe they were just mentioning that change? Severe protein increases on bloodwork could signal an infection or even certain types of cancer but I would expect her to be SICK if that were the case (fever, limping, weight loss, etc.) Regardless, dietary protein actually has little to do with blood protein so I wouldn't necessarily recommend changing her diet at all. The only times I really care about dietary protein are if the protein level is too low or for special cases like kidney failure. Now there are things on bloodwork like high triglycerides or cholesterol that ARE more responsive to diet change, so maybe there was a misunderstanding/miscommunication about what was actually too high. In closing - I can't be sure without seeing the bloodwork myself, but in general, I don't change diets for healthy young dogs because of protein elevations. I am sure that you have probably noticed that there are several different foods available in the market which does not make it any easier sometimes. I prefer any of the Purina pro Plan diets as they are highly nutritious and also very palatable. Also, I highly recommend the hill's Science Diet foods which are also great. I personally prefer the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends for puppies as they are generally inexpensive, are of great quality and dogs seems to love it. For the amount to feed her, I advice you follow the guidelines that you will find in the back of the bag. Keep in mind that you should get the puppy blend. Also, keep in mind that as she grows, you will notice in the back of the bag that it will advice you feed her more. When she becomes a year old, she should be switched to an adult diet. It is a matter of using a new protein and carbohydrate that he may tolerate better. For example, if he is on chicken and rice, switch him to lamb and potato for instance. Another option is a hydrolized protein diet and finally something like Royal canin low fat GI. That is actually what my dog is on who also has severe food allergies and he does great. Good luck!

These are well-known brands that are stocked in veterinary hospitals, and are AAFCO formulated to be balanced and appropriate.
