How to identify ticks on a puppy? What does a tick look like?

What a cute puppy! Without seeing the bug, it is very difficult to say. Both ticks and fleas can have this coloration. I would recommend talking to your vet about starting a flea/tick preventative such as Nexgard for your puppy!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the picture! It looks like an engorged tick. Gently lift it up and if you see 8 legs then it is a tick. Pull it gently off the skin where the head attaches to the skin or you can have your Vet for Vet tech remove it for you. I would change the brand of tick prevention you are using or start using one. They leave behind brown flecks that when rubbed under water turn reddish-brown. If you see these flecks, he has fleas, even if you can't see the fleas. Ticks are much larger and slower. They have several legs and they typically stay attached to the skin. If you are concerned, talk to your vet about a flea and tick prevention that you give every 30 days. The pictures are too blurry and not close up enough for me to tell exactly what you are talking about. If they are ticks they will have legs if you look closely. If you see ticks you can remove them. If you are not sure how to do that you can watch YouTube videos on how to do it properly. Red mange (or demodecosis) is unlikely in a dog this age unless she is very immunocompromised or stressed. If she didn't have it as a puppy then she is unlikely to have it now. There is no way to tell if it is mange for sure without a deep skin scraping. I honestly think the most likely thing going on is a bacterial skin infection. If you are unsure of what is going on you can always take her to your vet for an exam. The best way to get rid of ticks would be to use an oral tick preventive like Nexgard or Simparica. You give him a tablet and the ticks will die. If you use it every month, it will prevent the vast majority of ticks from attaching to Oli. If you cannot get one of these products, wash him in a flea and tick shampoo. Make sure to read the directions carefully as it often requires you to leave the shampoo in contact with the skin for 10 minutes or so. Each product is different and will tell you the appropriate directions. Brushing him will also help. In some parts of the world, ticks can transmit diseases. That looks more like a scab than a tick. Examine the area closely. If it's a tick, you will be able to see 8 tiny legs (4 on each side). If it's a scab, hair will be attached to the lesion. I can't really tell from the picture what it is. If you dog isn't on a flea or tick preventative, that could be part of the issue. Skin infection, sebaceous cyst, or other masses would be possible, as well. I would wait and see what happens. You can get her started on a flea preventative, and use a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra Shampoo for mild skin infections.
