Why am I itching around my 11-month-old puppy, but he has no fleas?

There are itchy skin conditions which can be transferred from pets to people - scabies, ringworm and occasionally flea bites can all cause itching in people. I recommend you get Goldie fully checked by your vet and skin scrapings/hair tests performed to rule these out - depending on the findings you may also need to see your own doctor or pharmacist for treatment also. Generally speaking however, recurrent seasonal itching is much more likely to be related to allergies and requires symptomatic treatment for Goldie - these are not contagious to people

Fleas live in the environment, not on the dog. They just on the dog to feed, and jump off when done. If you haven't disinfected your home, that may be why Sunnie is still itching and you are starting to itch. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If this doesn't help, then I'd be concerned it could be something else contagious going on like mange or ringworm. Then I would take him back into the vet, and have you see your doctor. Oh no, poor Jax! It looks like he might have ringworm, which is a highly contagious fungal infection. Unfortunately it's contagious to humans, and if you are itching too, he may have passed it onto you. I would have him seen by a vet tomorrow. If he does have ringworm, the vet can prescribe medication to treat it. You should also go see your doctor if he has it so you can get treatment for it as well. Should he have ringworm, you will need to disinfect the environment because the spores can live in the home for up to 18 months. Ginger needs to be seen by a veterinarian for a diagnosis on what's going on with her skin, but if she is very itchy and if you have a rash that's similar to hers, I'd definitely recommend you both get that checked right away (you by your doctor, of course :-) ). There is a skin mite called sarcoptes that can infect a dog's skin and cause intense itching, and this mite can also be spread to people. Thankfully, if that's the case, it's easy to treat - but does require a prescription medication from the veterinarian. So, definitely have her checked as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Allergies and mange would be at the top of my list. A vet can easily check for intestinal parasites (mange) and then figure out a treatment plan for allergies if you don't have any parasites. There are many many different way to treat allergies, depending on how much you want to spend on medications/testing.

It's possible that your dog and brothers could both be suffering from a contact allergy of some kind. However, dogs can get a number of skin problems that are contagious to humans such as scabies or ringworm, so this is a possibility as well. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for an exam as soon as possible - he/she can do some simple skin tests to check for these problems, which will help to guide treatment for him as well as your brothers if a contagious disease is found.
