How much homemade food for my overweight small dog to lose weight?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 17 lbs

My chic/Dachshund is somewhat overweight .I feed her nutro small breed about 1/4 cup 2 x a day. I would like to reduce this and instead have chicken, rice and veg or a mix of the two. How much should I give her?. She plays caught for 15 minutes a day and has a daily walk of 20 minutes. She's about 16-17#. How long should this take? Thanks

It's very hard to get a balanced homemade diet, and just giving Salt chicken, rice, and veg will not be fully balanced for her. If you want to do a homemade diet to help her lose weight, I will put a link to two websites below that give recipes for homemade diets for dogs. They are recipes provided by veterinary nutritionists, so they will be balanced nutritionally for her. In terms of her losing weight, you don't want it to happen quickly, it should be slowly over time. A healthy weight loss is between one to five pounds per month depending on the dog's size and current condition. I hope this helps!
