Why is my Goldendoodle panting and itching a lot? Is it allergies?

Hi there. Breathing hard or panting at rest can be due to a number of different things. Some common possibilities in an older dog would include hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, liver problems, or heart disease. It's also possible that he's simply hot, or that he is somewhat painful or uncomfortable due to his arthritis. I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam when you are able to. Your veterinarian can do blood work to check for these problems and get him started on appropriate treatment if any abnormalities are found.

Benadryl can be given to dogs to treat allergies but it is always best to check with your vet before giving medications. Since your vet knows your dogs complete medical history, he/she would know if there is a contraindication to giving any medications. Dogs with allergies can also develop secondary bacterial infection that may require an antibiotic, corticosteroid, and/or an anti-histamine to treat. If her signs persist or worsen then she should be seen by a vet to determine the best way to treat. There is also an allergy medication called Apoquel that works very well in controlling allergies in dogs. You could also switch to a completely hypoallergenic diet, like z/d, and see if that helps, too. Bathing her with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-Soothe, may also help.

Poor guy. This sounds exhausting! I would inquire with your vet about starting him on allergy medication such as Apoquel or Cytopoint injections and possibly even anti-anxiety medication such as Fluoxetine or Clomicalm. Typically dogs don’t itch due to anxiety, there is almost always an underlying allergy to either something in the environment or something in their food. You may consider bathing him twice per week with a medicated shampoo if he has been prescribed one. If not, try a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. This can physically remove some allergens and help to soothe the skin relieving the itchiness. Please, take Reagan to your local vets today. For bad allergic reaction, home treatment with shampoos and antihistamine medications are usually not very effective.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ruby. Diseases associated with the brain can definitely bring about behavioral changes, which may include anxiety. However, there are other more benign diseases that could be causing her to feel itchy and thus anxious and thus causing the rapid breathing. Those can include something infectious like fleas and mites or something inflammatory like allergies. With her history of a degenerative myelopathy, this could be a sign of progression, especially if she having abnormal pain or intchiness coming from her back end as her nerves continue to degenerate. I would have Ruby examined by your veterinarian to rule out other beings causes for her symptoms before we say this is neurologic I.e brain disease or progressive degenerative myelopathy. You are correct that the licking and chewing of the paw along with the sneezing can be a sign of allergies in Penny. Dragging her bottom on the ground could be due to intestinal parasite or impacted anal sacs. I would have Penny seen by a vet for her symptoms. Using a physical exam, rectal exam, fecal exam (bring along a sample of her feces with you), blood tests, and urinalysis, the vet can diagnose what is causing all of her symptoms and can discuss treatment options with you. If she does have allergies, she may need steroids or antihistamines to treat it. Intestinal worms require a deworming treatment, while impacted anal sacs can be expressed by the vet. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow if possible.
