Why is my Golden Retriever's skin turning black and what should I do?

It may be chronic changes to the skin from allergies or from an infection. Without actually seeing her skin I cannot say exactly what it is. Without seeing them, I cannot say for sure. Some will turn from fly bites but usually have crust on them. Some will turn from yeast or bacterial infection. Some will just scar from age and will lose hair. It could also be due to mange or a thyroid problem. Since this is New, I would have your vet take a look to see if it is something that needs to be treated. I hope this helps!

Change in pigmentation, early stages of yeast or bacterial infection can cause these kind of spots. Yeast (usually Malassezia spp.) can cause accumulation of black discharge, often very persistently attached to skin. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid licking (if any). Skin darkening can occur due to natural aging, low level irritation from infection or allergies, a healed wound or changes in hormone levels from hypothyroidism. This may be a natural pigment change as he develops or may be related to a skin irritation such as from demodex mites or a yeast infection. If there is no heat, discomfort or itching of the area continue to monitor closely - your vet or vet nurse could take a look to put your mind at ease and advise if any investigation or treatment is recommended

That may be just normal pigmentation changes. If the skin feels, or looks rougher than normal, if there are scabs or if she itches those areas then I would be more concerned. I hope this was helpful!

It may be due to true skin problems like allergy or skin infection. However, if she doesn't show excessive skin itchiness or redness she may have hormonal problems (diabetes, underactive thyroid gland, overactive adrenal gland etc). You shoud get her checked by your vets. They are likely to recommend skin testing and blood test to find out what is going on.
