Will a 2-week, 8-hour daily hike overwork my golden retriever?

Not at all! This is great exercise for Linus provided that the weather is neither excessively hot (over 80 degrees F) nor cold (under 40 degrees F). Obviously limit your time outside during more extreme temperature conditions. Otherwise, keep up the hiking and enjoy the dog parks!

There is no way of knowing for sure but as long as he has no history or any joint issues such as underlying hip dysplasia he may be capable. You should be prepared to have an emergency plan that he can be collected and minded should he develop any signs of lameness, discomfort or foot problems.

Hello! There is no precise answer for this. I tell people it's easiest to use common sense and let the puppy tell them what is too much. A long walk in the park or a short hike in the mountains (under 1 hour) should be fine. If you are expecting him to run behind your bike for even 20 minutes, this is likely too much. If he keeps up and seems happy and playful, that's just right. If he is lagging behind and seems worn out, too much! And make sure you offer water often especially when it's warm outside.

This is a great question! Yes, there is a concern that dogs who aren't fully grown shouldn't have too much exercise because it can have negative effects on their growth. The amount of exercise a dog of Oly's age should get is five minutes for every month of age; therefore, he should be getting at least 40 minutes of exercise twice a day. You can add on five minutes for each month of age to his exercise, and I would wait to do such long walks until he is fully grown (around 18 months of age). I would recommend scaling back on these long walks for now, and sticking to 40 minutes twice a day. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the dogs are not in shape I would start off on short walks multiple times per day to work up their tolerance. There is no formula per se as all dogs athletic abilities and desire to walk and run are different. If you are looking for a running partner start off walking and then a slow jog and slowly increase your distance. I think it is fair to say most dogs should get 2 walks per day. Hello, I would let Jasper jog as much as he enjoys with you, while watching him for signs of exhaustion or overheating. If he becomes tired, allow him to rest and drink and do not push him to continue jogging. Try taking him for a few test jogs to see how long Jasper generally wants to run at a time. I think three miles may be a bit long of a distance for a young puppy, but he will likely be able to handle that just fine once he is an adult. I hope this is helpful.
