My goat has a lump and is limping after a CD&T shot. Is this normal?

That is a very common occurrence after vaccination. The vaccine can cause a localized reaction and it should resolve on its own within a month. If it persists, seems larger, or bothers him that have your vet take a look at it.

It is possible that the injection site is hurting a bit. We inject about 1cc under the skin and sometimes a dog reacts a bit sensitive to the vaccine. This is just a temporary effect and the pain should go away within 48 hours. Sometimes there is a swelling and that should also go away within about 48 hours. If the pain and/or swelling persists you will have to take Guss to a vet to have it examined, as in very rare cases the pet can get an injection abscess that would then need to be lanced,

Hello and thank you very much for your question. What you were most likely experiencing is an injection site reaction. D’s can sometimes go away within 24 to 48 hours for these can stay for months. Sometimes these reactions can also be painful and elicit other immune responses such as difficulty breathing, etc. My best advice is to contact the veterinary clinic that administered the injections and tell them what you are experiencing. What most likely will happen is that they may want to re-examine your animal and possibly give you some topical or oral or injectable medication to offset the inflammation. Generally, these appointments do not cost anything and be makers of the vaccine take care of the costs associated. But this all depends on the veterinarian and the clinic involved. Poor Rocky. A lump at the vaccination site, as well as some soreness and tiredness, are normal after getting a vaccine. If Rocky will let you, you can try holding a warm compress (such as a washcloth soaked in warm water and then wrung out) against the sore area for a few minutes 1-2 times daily until he seems to be feeling better. Usually, most pups are back to normal within a few days :)

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Bruce's lump. Vaccinations can definitely leave behind a small bump at times. If this happens after I vaccinate a dog, I will have the client bring their pet in so I can examine the spot, make sure that it coincides with where I gave the vaccine for sure. If it is something new rather than a lump from the vaccine, it can be addressed accordingly. As long as it is just from the vaccine, then we monitor the spot over the course of a few weeks. If it is a localized inflammatory response to the vaccine, it usually will go away over time. If it persists, some clients will opt to have me remove the tiny lump and test it to make sure it just comes back as an inflammatory response and not something serious. I would definitely call your veterinarian and have Bruce get a quick examination to make sure all is well, and you will likely just monitor the lump going forward. You will need to have your goat examined by a veterinarian as he may have arthritis caused by a virus (CAE). The arthritic form of the CAE virus is most common and is seen in adult goats 1 - 2 years old. The goats often suffer from weight loss, poor hair condition, and enlarged joints. Lameness is a cardinal sign. CAE can be diagnosed via a blood test. He may have other problems such as an injury, a fracture or a severe sprain. This can only be diagnosed via a hands-on exam by your vet.
