Worried: Will a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy harm my existing cat?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Hi, I have a house Cat named Aspen, he will be 2 in February. My question is I would like to get a dog and I found a puppy. That is a German shorthair pointer. I am worried that the dog will hurt or kill my cat.

I cannot speak specifically to that particular dog however, that breed (German Shorthaired Pointer) overall may not be a good fit with a cat. GSP dogs are bred for hunting and if Aspen is prone to running away from a dog this "chase" behavior will bring out the hunting instinct in the dog and this could definitely be an issue.

I think you are right to be worried. If you do decide to keep the dog I would STRONGLY suggest you seek the guidance of a dog trainer that will come to your home and can help you police the interaction between the cat and dog and can give you training tips on how to manage the situation.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
