My 11-week French Bulldog puppy is itching, red, and sneezing. Help!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Well, he is quite adorable that's for sure. The skin amd eye issues could be due to allergies. However, while general allergies can cause a cough, this would be a bit unusual and other possible causes of coughing like pneumonia, bronchitis, and heart failure should be investigated. The coughing could also be due to pneumonitis secondary to exposure to the cleaning products. I recommend that you have Pacino evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch.

Hello. Benadryl will not help the runny nose in your puppy as she may have a mild upper respiratory infection. If she is eating & drinking well, playful & active, this will probably resolve on its own. The itchy skin might be from fleas, or mites. Make sure you are treating her with an age appropriate flea product & if she continues to itch, I would dip her once a week in a Lime Sulfur product that you can purchase on-line or at most Tractor Supply stores. This would be much better than Benadryl. If the nasal discharge turns thick or your puppy seems unwell, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. You can give him a cool bath in a hypoallergenic shampoo. That will soothe the skin. You can also give some Benadryl for the itching. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages for common over the counter medications. I’m glad you are taking him in since that’s unusual for a puppy to be that itchy. I don't see anything wrong in the pictures, but I would have to examine him in-person to really be able to assess him. Sudden itchiness is usually due to a contact allergy, or possibly due to an environmental allergy. I would check to see if he had contact to any aerosol sprays, disinfectants, perfumes, bathing products, fiberglass, or other new bedding, etc. Without seeing the behavior and knowing the full history, it's difficult to know for sure that this is itching behavior. However, you can give him a bath with just cool water for 15 minutes and see if that helps. If you are not able to determine the cause of this, or the bath is not helping, then I'd recommend a visit to the vet, or possibly an online consult with one of our Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach experts. We can usually narrow down a cause for the behavior and at-least rule-out any serious causes of his condition. I hope that helps and Marley gets back to normal soon.

The dose for Benadryl is 1mg per pound of body weight. I would give Lulu 1/2 of a 25mg tablet once. If the bumps don't go down in a couple hours, she should see a vet for diagnosis! Especially if the bumps spread or you see facial swelling, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy.

At 6 months old Ollie is a little young for allergies, but it can happen. I would make sure that your vet checked for demodex and sarcoptes mange as well. At this age he is too young for Apoquel which is an anti itch medication but he could get Cytopoint injections which are also helpful for itching. Make sure he is on a good flea preventive as well just to be sure.
