Senior dog food formulas are lower in calories and contain less fat, protein and sodium. These may not fulfill the nutritional requirements of your dog. Furthermore, neither AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) nor the National Research Council (NRC) provides guidelines for senior dog formulas. There is NO distinction made between the nutritional requirements for adult dogs and those for senior dogs. As a result, the ingredients used in pet food marketed for ‘seniors’ is determined by the manufacturer and varies widely.

It depends on the brand of food. Read the bag and if it says it is "approved for all life stages" then it should be OK. Adding the chicken is fine but that won't balance the diet for an adult dog vs a senior dog. If you want to continue with the senior food then I would suggest getting her a multi-vitamin so that you are sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs.

Senior food tends to have less calories and maybe some other ingredients to help with arthritis, but is adequate for adults. If your dogs are overweight, then I'd advise feeding the senior food. If they are all lean, then it would be fine to feed them all the adult food. There is not really a big difference, so that is the only consideration I have for determining the best formula to feed.

Is it safe for my adult dog to eat puppy or junior dry food?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Junior dog food has a different calcium to phosphorus ratio, as well as having higher energy/fat amounts in the food. This is designed for growing animals. Adult dogs should have adult food as the majority of their diet so that they don't gain weight, and the higher fiber is good for their gut. If you give Sharon junior food once and a while, that is not a problem, but in general feed him adult food. Best of luck with Sharon!

How much protein should my senior dog eat for optimal health?

According to the National Research Council (NRC) on Nutrient Requirements for Dogs and Cats, the daily protein requirement for an adult dog is 23 g of crude protein. This can be confusing because most pet food labels list protein as a % basis. You can calculate whether your dog is receiving at least 23 g of crude protein per day based on how much food you feed him. The NRC does not list a protein requirement specifically for senior dogs, so you can feed the amount recommended for adult dogs. However, senior dogs do require fewer calories overall.
