How to help a fearful senior rescue dog adjust to a new home?

The best thing to do is to give her a lot of TLC. I would try to keep things quiet for a little while in the home. I would not force her into any uncomfortable situations like a lot of visitors. I would make sure you give her treats for positive behaviors like going outside or coming to you when called. She will learn that you are her new “person” before long but just be patient with her. In situations such as these, time is your friend, as well as patience. 4 years living solely outside is a long time for a dog, and that's a lot of years of work to reverse. You may want to treat Perseus as if he were a puppy, starting with a similar routine for feeding, potty training, etc to get him used to being around people and in/out of a house. Getting him used to you can take time. Always approach by talking calmly and gently and tossing a treat toward him. Not directly facing him and/or crouching down can also make you less intimidating and scary. Let him approach you first rather than you approach him, and be sure to quietly praise or offer treats any time he does. As he gets more used to you, you can then treat only when he allows petting or approaches you and accepts gentle handling. This can take a lot of time, so patience and always maintain a calm presence can help. It is also a good idea to speak with a trainer or behaviorist in your area who can come to the home and offer more tailored advice for how to help Perseus. They can help formulate a training plan as in the case of a behaviorist may also be able to recommend medications to help keep him stress free and relaxed as he learns how to be a dog.

Congratulations on adopting Lady! Earning trust will take a lot of patience and time. Remember that she has had a lot of sudden changes with her new home and a new person in her life. Start by giving her space in her new home and try putting a bed in her favorite space in the house to make this her "safe spot". Try to avoid approaching her if she is in this safe spot. If Lady is food motivated, you can start by offering a few high value treats when she lets you gently pet her. Some dogs are threatened when you reach over the top of the head and respond more favorably to scratches on the chest or under the chin. Once you figure out what she enjoys (food, walks, chasing a ball, etc.), you will be able to build upon that activity and spend most of your interaction doing her favorite things. One other thing to try is a calming pheromone collar or diffuser (Adaptil is one example) to see if this helps to calm her a bit. I hope this helps!

What a lucky little dog to have been adopted by a loving family such as yours!! Little dogs can find almost everything about the world quite scary. If Princess Skylar is most comfortable in her kennel then I would allow her to stay in there as needed. Put her kennel in a central part of the house (eg the living area) so that she is still ‘with’ the family. And encourage your children to sit quietly on the floor and offer her treats. It is very important to let her adjust to her new surrounds, and also for the children to hnderstand that she is scared and needs to be treated very gently and quietly. Be sure to leave the kennel door propped open for her so she has ready access and can come and go as needed to feel safe. She is a very sweet looking dog and I am sure will assimilate into your family very quickly!

You are doing a good job. Some dogs take years to relax with other people. I recommend taking Mindy, with both you and your husband, to a group obedience class. She will gain confidence when she learns commands and it will help her to be around other dogs and people. You can also try the natural supplement Solliquin. It helps reduce anxiety during training and I’ve found with rescue dogs it helps them with adjusting to a new environment. Continue to be patient and don’t force the issue as that may make it worse. Always introduce dogs in neutral territory. So, not on the property at all. Somewhere like a local park so they can meet each other without anyone being territorial. Do this a few times before moving in. Keep both dogs on leashes so you have control over them if things go awry. If the dogs are not spayed/neutered that should be done because raging hormones often causes fights especially when females are in heat. I would also suggest start using Adaptil diffusers (calming dog pheromones) in the house starting a couple days prior to moving and refill them every 30 days for the first couple months. I would also get Adaptil collars for both dogs to wear starting a few days prior to the first meeting.
