How far should I insert a rectal thermometer to get my dog's temp?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 80 lbs

How far do you have to go in with a thermometer? Is 1/2 inch enough?

Just a little bit past the anus is fine. Make sure the tip is completely in the anus, but you don't want to stick it in too far or it may make Louie uncomfortable and/or get stuck in poop and not give an accurate reading.
