English Bulldog smelly folds: How to stop recurring yeast infections?

The most common reason for the smell in facial folds is an overgrowth of a normal yeast that grows on the skin called Malassezia. There are a number of medicated wipes that have an anti-fungal medication in them that might help with the smell. The most common anti-fungal ingredients in the topical wipes is miconazole or ketoconazole. You can ask your veterinarian which products they carry. I generally recommend a medicated wipe over a cream because a cream can actually add moisture to the skin fold and allow even more yeast to grow in the area. Good luck! She will probably need either antibiotics or anti fungal oral medications at this point, you will also need to continue with the daily cleansing simultaneously, i would recommend taking her to your vet ASAP in order to get it treated.

I recommend that you sue a medicated wipe like Dechra MalAcetic HC Wipes to clean the skin folds once daily. There is not magical way to keep it dry except to dry it with a clean towel when it gets wet, like after mealtimes or after bathing. If Rooney's eyes water more than seems normal, it may be wise to have him checked out by a vet to discuss possible causes and specific treatments. Many Bulldogs also have food allergies and some skin issues can be resolved by finding an appropriate dog food - this can also be discussed with your vet.

If Gus has allergy issues and is pretty miserable with the itching, he should be on an anti inflammatory medication like Apoquel or steroids to help with the swelling and itching. Also antibiotics and sometimes topical or oral antifungals if the infection involves yeast. You have to keep the skin clean with an antifungal shampoo and/or wipes, like a shampoo with ketoconzole and wipes with ketoconazole. There are dozens of products on the market that help control yeast on dogs' skin. If you are observing skin lesions and an odor he may have both a bacterial and yeast infection. While some cases can be treated topically and with medicated shampoos, more severe cases often requires oral antibiotic and antifungal therapy. As a first line therapy, start with a medicated shampoo that can be used for both yeast and bacterial infections such as Malaseb or Virbac or products recommended by your veterinarian. Additionally, it is important to make sure he is on a monthly flea prevention as many pets are sensitive to fleas. If this is secondary to allergies or what we refer to as atopy, he may require additional therapy including an allergy vaccine.

Oh Bruno is a handsome guy! Unfortunately, bulldogs are very prone to skin allergies and secondary yeast and bacterial infections, as well as fold dermatitis (in the facial and tail folds). Brachycephalic dogs (dogs with short faces) commonly develop skin problems in their facial folds. The combination of excessive skin and the tearing from their eyes commonly results in excessive moisture in their skin folds which can easily become infected.
