How can I get my dog to drink more water if he won't finish his bowl?

It is concerning that it appears that Nicco isn't drinking water, and it sounds like you are keeping an eye on the levels. I would recommend measuring out the water in the morning into the bowl, and then the next morning measuring the remaining water to get an exact amount of how much he is drinking. Normally a dog should drink between 8.5-17 ounces of water per 10 pounds. Nicco should be drinking around 17-34 ounces daily if we round his weight up to 20 pounds. Check to see if he is drinking this amount, and if he is, then he is getting enough water. To ensure he is getting enough water, you can try mixing in canned food with his dry food. Canned food has a higher moisture content, and that will get extra water into his food. You can soak his dry food in warm water, or occasionally add in some low sodium beef or chicken broth. Finally, you can get Nicco a pet water fountain. These provide a continual source of fresh water for him, and dogs love drinking from them. I have one, and my pets love it. Adding water to her meals is fine. If you observe that she is drinking more than usual or urinating more than usual, she may need to have her urine checked. The only way to measure water intake is to separate her and measure the amount of water offered subtracted from the amount she consumes in 24 hours. Most healthy pets will consume enough if made available.

A healthy dog will generally drink as much body as it's body needs as long as it has access to clean fresh water at all times. Since you are giving water with the food, it's possible this is meeting all her body's water needs. Certainly continuing to put water in her food is fine and is encouraged if she is not a good drinker on her own. You may also see if she will drink more readily out of a pet water fountain. Your dog should be drinking approximately 586 ml or 2 cups & 4 oz of water a day. if he is eating wet food he will drink much less as there is about 80% water in wet food. make sure the water is fresh, cool and clean.

A good way to increase water consumption is to give canned food. That said, Nico may be taking enough for his needs on a regular basis. Assuming he is alert, happy, energetic, has soft stool, he might be just fine. A visit to your regular veterinarian would confirm he is ok or if there is an issue to work on. Most dogs will drink roughly 60 ml per kg per day, so I'd expect Yusi to drink roughly 180 ml. However, dogs are very good at self-regulating so if he is eating well and acting otherwise healthy, then I wouldn't worry - he's drinking what he needs!

Chewing rocks and other strange objects is common in puppies. It is part of their oral exploration of their environment as they develop. It is also common while they are teething. Try not prevent the behaviour if you can by replacing the rocks with more appropriate chew toys. Most dogs need about an ounce of fluids per pound of body weight per day, so a 10-pound dog needs a bit over a cup of clean water daily. I would advise measuring this amount out in fresh water every morning. Then monitor if the bowl is empty by th end of the day. It is normal for a dog to spread out his drinking throughout the day.
