What dry dog food options for dogs with yeast and severe allergies?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 68 lbs

I have a dog with severe yeast on his belly and feet. I bathe him regularly in medicated shampoo but he’s definitely allergic to ALL sugar. Blueberries have a lot of sugar, didn’t work for him. Peas and carrots had to many. I’ve found the spinach with chicken and beans has helped a lot. He is 6 yrs old. Can you give me any dry dog food options that would even work for him? I did find a Science Diet called Z/D. Right now he can only eat what I prepare.

Science Diet Z/D is great for dogs with food allergies. I recommend trying Clyde with that to see if it helps. Royal Canin also have a Hypoallergenic dog food that is good for dogs with food sensitivities that manifest as skin issues. I hope this helps!

There are some grain-free foods that utilize peas instead of sweet potatoes, so looking at some grain-free products in your local pet store may help you find a product that works if Chevy can't handle it. A food trial with your vet where you eliminate everything, and then slowly work back up to it can also help see if there is a particular food causing Chevy's skin problems. In a lot of cases, the allergy is to a protein source, and not a grain or carbohydrate, so trying out some novel proteins such as turkey, venison, duck, etc may also help if the issue is food-related.

Do dog food protein or carbs cause recurring skin yeast infections?

This is a great question. Dogs can have food allergies that cause skin infections (or environmental allergies that cause infection), so the TYPE of protein in the diet could be a problem, but not the AMOUNT. I do not worry about the carbs in dog food. As a rule, I recommend a high quality food such as Purina ProPlan, Hill's Science Diet, or Royal Canin for food. There are special prescription diets that are hypoallergenic and can be used to rule out a food allergy. Your veterinarian should be able to get you information about this if you give them a call.

Puppy with severe food allergies: What prescription diet should I try?

I would try hills z/d ultra or royal canin anallergenic (an even more restricted version). Ensure also she is not receiving any additional treats, flavored tablets, bones, table scraps or raiding any garbage bins. She may also require prescription medication to resolve the current flare up. A home prepared diet may be an option but would have to be formulated with the help of an expert nutritionalist and can only comprise of novel ingredients (foods she has never eaten before such as kangaroo/venison/sweet potato etc - these are very difficult to supplement sufficiently and are very expensive to maintain in the long term)

A hydrolyzed therapeutic diet might be the best option for a dog with food allergies and potential heart disease. Hills makes a version called z/d, Royal Canin makes HP and Purina makes HA. If Charlie has that bad of allergies I would recommend a hydrolyzed protein diet. This is a prescription diet that has the protein broken down to where the body can't recognize it. Otherwise you can try Salmon flavored food although, it is not hypoallergenic it has fish oil in it to help with his skin. I would eliminate all treats and human food to help with weight loss. If you need an over-the-counter option, some dogs with food allergies do well on Natural Balance limited ingredient diets - these don't work as consistently as prescription diets do, but are often less expensive so can be a reasonable alternative option if needed due to cost.
