Is 100% dry dog food okay? Why is canned dog food more expensive?

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. Great question! I don't know what this "man's" background is but I don't suggest you take advice from someone who likely knows nothing about nutrition in dogs. This includes many pet stores employees, breeders and people that do internet research from sources with no factual background. Dry food is just fine for dogs and you don't have to use an expensive food. Just don't use a super cheap food (like Ol' Roy). If you are looking for a good dry food that is reasonably priced then I would use Purina One. I would use a weight control diet (it is fine to feed that to both dogs) and be sure you are feeding the correct amount based on their IDEAL weight (not the current weight). You really need to get some weight off the big dog. Minimize treats and it is suggested you not feed any people food when trying to get a dog to lose weight. Yes, dogs can do very well on dry food only. It isn't that dry food is the most ideal food, simply that for most pet owners, it is the most convenient food to store, and the most affordable. There are some people that choose to feed raw dog food, or even cook all their dogs meals. In general, there are many options, what matters is that our dogs are feed a nutritionally balanced diet. If people choose to prepare their own food for their dogs, they should follow recipes from veterinarians, and not just recipes on blogs. I hope this information answers your question.

Most commercially available canned foods are still balanced diets. As long as Zoey is eating a food formulated for growing puppies, she should still be meeting all of her nutritional needs. However, being a small breed dog, she is naturally more prone to developing dental issues as she ages. Dry food is a bit more abrasive to the teeth, which will help to decrease tartar formation. You can try mixing a small amount of dry food with her wet food to try to tempt her to eat it. Otherwise, be sure to brush her teeth daily to maintain oral health. Be sure that you are feeding a high quality brand of food (Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Royal Canin are some of my favorites), and keep Zoey on puppy food until she is 1 year old. Anytime you change flavors or brands of food, mix the old and new foods together over 5-7 days for a slower transition to decrease the incidence of vomiting and diarrhea. Wet food should be just fine provided that you stay on top of brushing her teeth. :-) I hope that all goes well!

As you know there are so many diets out there it's hard for anyone to keep up with all of them. What matters is that the diet is nutritionally balanced for the particular life stage of the pet, their body condition score, and their activity level. Diets vary in content, number of ingredients, energy density, fillers/additives, supplements, vitamins/minerals, etc. Some diets are what are called Limited Ingredient diets and these are for pets that may have food problems with certain foods such as a sensitivity or even an allergy to certain proteins. The grain feed fad appears to be just that. Since many humans now are cutting out grains, the pet food manufacturers have jumped on that as a marketing ploy but no evidence exists that grains in general are a problem for most pets. There are cases where pets do better without grains according to the owners. These diets tend to be higher in price and again, like I said, a marketing ploy. So bottom line, look for a diet that Chloe enjoys eating, is appropriate for an adult small-medium breed dog which fits her activity level, and fits your financial budget. Some nutritionists now believe that switching dog foods and brands occasionally (with a very slow transition to the new diet over a 2 week period) is good for pets since no one diet is appropriate for an individual pet. Good question, although it's difficult to answer accurately without knowing Riley's history and medical issues that may have factored into previous advice. As a general rule, it is fine to serve kibble either dry or soaked in water - most dogs do fine with either option and both options have pros & cons. Softening the food helps encourage more water intake and might encourage some dogs to eat a little bit slower (for those dogs who are what I call "scarf & barfers"!). Feeding kibble dry *may* be better for teeth, although in my opinion most kibbles don't do much to help keep teeth clean since they are so easily chewed up, unless you're feeding a prescription dental food such as t/d. So, sorry if this is a non-answer....but frankly both ways of feeding are perfectly acceptable! Hope this helps.

There are good options in each of those categories. Moist or canned does not necessarily mean high fat, nor does it necessarily mean their teeth will suffer (although you will need to be more conscious of brushing teeth or giving dental chews if they are on a canned diet). Dogs with any predisposition to urinary issues or kidney disease are actually better off on canned or high moisture food, as it increases their water intake (because of the water in the food). You can also feed a mixture of canned and dry. I recommend a high quality commercial pet food such as Science Diet or Nutro.

Wet food is not bad for dogs. Unfortunately this has become a misconception that many people believe. Some people say that canned food will cause worsening of dental disease or faster accumulation of tartar / plaque. This is not true as I have seen dogs on hard food have terrible dental disease whereas some dogs on canned food have beautiful teeth with no dental disease. If Crystal did well on canned food and does not like dry food, there is absolutely no problem in feeding canned food. I would just make sure to try and brush her teeth whenever possible to remove pieces of soft food from between the teeth. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
