My dog has worms and isn't eating. What dewormer should I use?

If Peggy has a large worm burden (lots of worms) then she likely feels sick and doesn't want to eat, and likely won't want to eat until the worms are gone. If the medication that your vet gave is a dewormer (typically a liquid called Panacur/Fenbendazole), then you can give it without food. This might clear out the worms and get Peggy eating again. If the medication is an antibiotic (Metronidazole, Amoxyclav), then this needs to be given with food. You can also talk to your vet about trying an anti-nausea medication to see if this helps with the appetite. If Peggy has abdominal pain, or is vomiting, please have her seen right away as high worm burdens can lead to a very life-threatening condition called intussusception. Deworming productions I recommend include Panacur and Drontal, both of which you can get from the vet. Panacur kills roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms, while Drontal kills those worms in addition to tapeworms. Drontal is a prescription only deworming treatment. Given that Prada Jean doesn't have an appetite and is very lethargic, I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what kind of worms she has in her stool and the best deworming medication for her. It depends on the type of worm, if any, your pet has. Some dewormers tear for a lot of parasites, such as Fenbendazole, while other only treat for a few, such as Pyrantle Palmloate. I wish we could help but in order to point you in the right direction your pet needs to have a fecal examination first to determine what intestinal parasite is present and then the appropriate dewormer can be recommended. Those look like they are probably roundworms. She would have gotten them from coming into contact with infective eggs in the soil most likely. (From where another dog pooped and that poop contained roundworm eggs, then your dog was nosing around near where that was (even if there was no obvious poop on the ground, the eggs will stay in the soil). It is not a result of the food. You can get effective roundworm treatment over the counter. Look for a pyrantel product and follow the label instructions. Feed stores will generally carry it. Panacur (fenbendazole) is probably one of the best broad spectrum dewormers. It treats hookworms, whipworms, roundworms and some tapeworms. It is also used to treat Giardia and lungworms. You will need to contact your veterinarian for a dose based on your dog's body weight.
