Yes, there are certain types of worms that can be passed from dogs to humans. These worms are contracted from exposure to dog feces. The eggs (microscopic) are passed in the feces and will become infective in the environment. However, you would have to get close enough to ingest or inhale the eggs for it to infect you. Hookworms, however, will actually penetrate the skin if you are exposed to them.

The good news is that you can help prevent them from being infective by cleaning up the feces soon after your dog defecates. If you clean it up within 24 hours, then it will reduce the likelihood of the eggs/larva being infective. Also, it's best not to go barefooted around the dog poop. If there is any contact, you can prevent infection by simply washing the contaminated area.

Generally, worm eggs and larva like warm (not hot) and humid environments. The southeast U.S. tends to have the biggest issues with them.

Hello, they can be transmitted via a fecal to oral route for both. In the case of hookworms, the species (Ancylostoma brazilienze) can burrow into the skin of people. I advised washing your hands after playing with your puppy and washing your feet/taking showers regularly if you think your yard is infested with hookworms. Similarly, there isn't any need to wear gloves when petting Lady or wipe the floor. Humans are most commonly infected from soil that is contaminated with hookworm larvae, so it would not be recommended to go outside barefoot to help prevent infection. Yes, this is certainly possible - certain types of worms, such as roundworms and hookworms, can be passed from cats to humans through contact with infected feces (poop). I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your veterinarian to confirm what type of worms are present, so that you can treat Buddy with an appropriate medication to get rid of them. In the meantime, make sure to wash your hands after cleaning his litter box, and ask your physician if you have any health concerns about yourself.

I certainly understand being concerned! Yes, it is possible that your grandson can get roundworms, but there are measures you can take to prevent that from happening. The eggs are found in the feces, and humans can get them from contact with infected feces and contaminated soil. If Stella has had some accidents in the house, there could be fecal matter in the carpet, and the eggs can survive for some time in the environment. I would make sure to clean up any poop in the home and yard, and disinfect the carpet where she had accidents. Practice proper hygiene, always using gloves to clean up any feces and washing your hands thoroughly afterwards. If you practice good hygiene, don't allow your grandson to touch the feces or ingest contaminated soil, and disinfect the carpet, that will significantly decrease any risk of transmission. Is it possible for my puppy to get dog worms from my clothing?

Yes, theoretically if eggs or the segments of certain types of worms are present in a persons clothes and the puppy ingests those eggs or segments, the puppy can get infected. However, this would require feces, or at least direct contact, from the anus of the infected dog to be in contact with the person. This would also have to be at the exact time that the eggs are being shed. Because these parasites don’t survive very long outside of their host, the puppy would have to ingest them directly from the person within a relatively short period of time.
