My dog won't snuggle with me. How can I still show them affection?

It is very unnatural for pets to be held like we hold human babies. Some pets just are not as affectionate as we would like. Some dogs will grow used to your ways of showing affection and will tolerate it, but think of how momma dogs show affection to puppies - through care, licking (petting is our equivalent), playing, and feeding. No momma dog actually wraps her arm around her puppy to hold her! It is good that Nova loves to sleep in her crate. She has chosen this as her safe and cozy haven. Dogs that feel safe in a crate are easier to potty train and have a safe way to remove themselves from situations when they are uncomfortable. She has chosen where she is most comfortable sleeping, and you should respect that boundary. I would recommend trying other ways to bond, such as play time, going for walks, and obedience training. Once basic obedience commands are learned, Nova can work on learning fun tricks! Teaching a dog new skills is great mental and physical stimulation that will create a deep bond between the two of you.

Most dogs are very bonded to their owners-especially dogs who have been cared for by the same person for years. There may be a reason that she does not want to stay with you in bed. Where does she go? Does she go straight to tile or wood because the bed is just too warm (my own dog started doing this recently). Do you toss and turn and it bothers Gabby? Does a fan blow on her? Is there a new candle or scent in your room? All these things may be reasons Gabby decides to lay down elsewhere. As with most dogs, you can strengthen your bond by petting and sitting together (try laying with her wherever she likes to lay for a few minutes). Not all dogs enjoy being held for extended periods of time, so I wouldn't force your puppy to sit on your lap or be held for long periods if he feels uncomfortable. You may be able to increase his willingness to sit on your lap or be held by rewarding him with treats or food whenever he is being held, so he associates the situation with good rewards. Filling a toy kong with wet dog food and freezing it or putting peanut butter in it and then holding the kong for your dog to lick at/chew on while you hold him on your lap may help encourage him to get used to being held by you. Slowly increase the amount of time you keep him on your lap/in your arms and be patient!

You may have inadvertently trained Marley to be such a cuddler - he obviously feels most secure when he's close to you. If you dont like this, you'll have to spend time training him to sleep and rest in his own bed. This is not an overnight process, but is best done with food and verbal rewards. When he is in his bed, toss him small training treats. You can also move his food bowl to be closer to his bed. If he sleeps in bed with you, have his bed on the floor and give him praise when he goes in it. I am a big fan of the ADAPTIL products - such as the pheromone collar and Plug in unit - they will help him feel more comfortable away from you.

It could be that something in the room upset Sophie previously, and that's why she is reacting this way at bedtime. I would try to make sleeping with you fun again by offering her treats when she comes to bed with you. Try to move as slowly and quietly as possible, and if you do startle her, do not comfort her. What you are doing by comforting her is actually reinforcing the behavior and telling her it's ok for her to act this way. If she gets upset, let her calm down, and then try to tempt her back to bed with a treat.
