My dog has a white spot on her skin, not scratching. What should I do?

It could have started as an allergy but as for now it looks infected, you will need to take Luna to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated, she will need a course of antibiotics and possibly some meds to stop the itchiness as well.

Hello, sorry to hear about Luna. It looks like she has intertrigo or skin fold pyoderma. This is generally a superficial skin infection from excess friction and moisture of the skin folds that leads to excess growth in normal skin bacteria/yeast that then becomes a local infection. What you may need to do is place an e-collar over her head so that she is not scratching at the area and then you may apply a light film of triple antibiotic to treat the infection. This looks like it could be an area of local infection or a skin parasite. My other concern is that it could be petechiae, which are tiny pinpoint hemorrhages and would indicate she has a clotting issue - I can't zoom in enough on this picture to decide if it really looks like that or not, but if you're seeing similar red dots elsewhere, Lola should go to her vet right away. If it's just this one spot, if it's getting bigger or she's getting itchy, she should go to her vet.

Those spots on Luna could be several things including allergies to flea bites, skin mites, ringworm (which humans can get), allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Luna wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a hot spot. This is basically a bacterial infection secondary to self-trauma such as scratching. This is possibly secondary to allergies or another cause resulting in itchiness. I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If confirmed a hot spot on examination, then they would start her on antibiotics and something like steroids to decrease the itch. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar which you may get from your local pet store to try to prevent further scratching. Good luck and have a good night!

It sounds like she has a hotspot which could be secondary to allergies and/or an infection. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at it to determine the best way to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and or a corticosteroid to treat and your vet can prescribe. If you can't take her to a vet than you could clean the area with an antiseptic wound cleaner but if she keeps scratching the area than it will not heal. Covering the area probably will not work but you could get an E-collar to prevent her from scratching.
